Jasprit Bumrah’s hopes to play in the IPL 2025 for the Mumbai Indians took a big hit. The medical staff of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has delayed ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah's return to the IPL 2025 season.
The star India and Mumbai Indians bowler was supposed to be match-ready by early April, but he is unlikely to return due to worries about his back ailment.
Bumrah suffered an injury during the fifth Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test against Australia in Sydney in January. The 31-year-old bowler was ruled out of the 2025 Champions Trophy, which India won earlier this month, where Team India's spinners dominated the spin-friendly wickets in Dubai.
Jasprit Bumrah had a lower back injury during the fifth Test against Australia in Sydney. He left the field during the first innings and did not return as India lost by eight wickets.
Jasprit Bumrah is being handled carefully by the BCCI medical team
The BCCI and chief selector Ajit Agarkar were optimistic that he would recuperate in time for the Champions Trophy, but he was ruled out. Harshit Rana took his place in India's Champions Trophy team and ODI series against England.
The bowler is not yet in prime condition to return to competitive cricket. Shane Bond, a former New Zealand pacer and Mumbai Indians bowling coach, reportedly warned that Bumrah is on the verge of a stress fracture in his back. Given his history of such ailments, an early recovery may jeopardize his career longevity.

BCCI medical team doesn’t want Jasprit Bumrah to suffer another back stress fracture
Jasprit Bumrah's injury appears to be more serious than anticipated. He has begun bowling in the nets but has yet to reach peak intensity. The BCCI medical team is actively watching his recovery at the Centre of Excellence and is cautious about his return to avoid long-term complications, such as a stress fracture.
"Bumrah's injury is a bit more serious. The medical team wants to ensure he doesn't suffer a stress fracture. Bumrah himself is being careful. He is bowling at the CoE, but it could take longer to get back in full swing. No definite timeline has been set yet, but one hopes he gets back by mid-April," The Times of India quoted a source as saying.
Akash Deep’s return is also delayed due to back issues; Mayank Yadav is uncertain
In addition to Bumrah, India and Bengal pacer Akash Deep has a back injury and is rehabbing at the NCA. He also suffered a back injury during the Australia tour. According to the TOI report, Akash Deep is slated to return to action by April 10.
Mayank Yadav, the pacer for the Lucknow Super Giants, is also in the same timeframe as Akash Deep and Bumrah. According to the updated standard operating procedure, the bowling coach at the CoE will provide final clearance.
While the medical team determines whether the player is fit enough to handle the rigours of high-performance sports, the bowling coach must determine whether the player is ready to play once he leaves the CoE.
