Jos Buttler has begun contemplating his future as England captain after his team’s eight-run defeat to Afghanistan in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 encounter at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Wednesday. This defeat also meant that England had been eliminated from the race for the semis.

Afghanistan put up a brilliant display to pile on 325 runs on top of opener Ibrahim Zadran's 177 and maintained composure to defeat the 2019 World Cup winners, leaving England eight runs short in a game that was a do-or-die situation.

Afghanistan dump England

Since the journey to India last month, this was England's eighth straight defeat under Buttler's leadership. Following their 3-0 defeat in the ODIs in India, England's Champions Trophy campaign began poorly when they were unable to hold off a depleted Australia and defend another 300-plus mark.

Jos Buttler questions his place in the England team

Buttler and company have missed the knockout stages of the Champions Trophy for the third time in a row. Buttler said that it might be time for reflection, even though the England skipper acknowledged that he would not make any snap judgments.

“Yeah, I think the results aren’t where they need to be and I need to consider all possibilities. Like I said we need to get us as a team back to where England cricket needs to be in the white ball formats. And I think I’ve got to work out personally am I part of the problem or am I part of the solution?

As I said, I’m not going to make any emotional decisions right here, right now. You’re probably not the first people I’d discuss that with. And take a little bit of time to just work out personally what I think is right. Obviously, the guys at the top are in charge and they will have their views as well – so as I said, we need to get the team back to where it needs to be – competing to win these tournaments and as I said I’ve got to work out – am I part of the solution or not?” Buttler said during the press conference.

“I enjoy leading”- Jos Buttler on England captaincy and personal form

There have also been doubts about Buttler's personal shape. Since the conclusion of the 2023 World Cup, Buttler has participated in eight ODI innings, scoring 214 runs at an average of 30.57 and reaching a high of 58 not out.

After the 2024 T20 World Cup, Buttler scored 271 runs in nine innings, including two fifties, at an average of 30.11, however, his batting performance in T20Is has been lacking.

“It’s had its moments for sure. I know lots of people think it doesn’t sit well with me being captain and that kind of thing but I really do enjoy it. I enjoy leading. Even before when I wasn’t captain I’d like to think of myself as a leader in the team. But, results are tough and they weigh heavy at times. And, of course, you want to be leading a winning team and we haven’t been that for a while now so obviously that brings some difficult moments,” said Buttler.
