Following their selection in England's squad for a home ODI series against the West Indies, Jos Buttler, Jacob Bethell, and Will Jacks seem destined to miss the rescheduled IPL 2025 playoffs.
Following cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan, the IPL was postponed last week. England's players are anticipated to return before the league resumes on Saturday.
However, Buttler (GT), Bethell (RCB), and Jacks (MI) now have to choose between their franchise obligations and international duty due to the revised dates.
IPL 2025 to resume on May 17
The IPL 2025, which was suspended for one week on May 9, will resume proceedings on May 17 with 13 league games and 4 playoff matches yet to be played. The final of the IPL 18 is scheduled on June 3, with playoff venues yet to be announced.
Before the massive auction in November, the ECB promised that all centrally contracted England players would be available for the 2025 IPL. However, the initial IPL dates were covered by that commitment, and the final has now been rescheduled for June 3.
For their three-match ODI series against the West Indies, which begins on May 29, England announced a 16-man roster on Tuesday. With the playoffs beginning on May 29 and ending on June 3, the IPL's group stage now lasts until May 27. MI, RCB, and GT are all in a strong position to advance to the next round.
Jos Buttler, Jacob Bethell, and Will Jacks' IPL 2025 return in doubt
The ECB did not provide a definitive answer when contacted on Tuesday evening about Jos Buttler, Jacob Bethel,l and Will Jacks' return to the IPL 2025.
"No Objection Certificates have been granted based on the original IPL dates, so we'll need to review any potential extensions, particularly about any clash with the final white-ball squad.
We're keen to support the IPL and the BCCI in getting the schedule up and running, and to facilitate players' return should they choose to go back. We'll continue to work closely with the BCCI and the IPL as the situation develops," an ECB spokesperson told ESPNCricinfo.
Teams suffer massively on resumption
Although their teams have already been eliminated from consideration for the IPL knockout rounds, Jofra Archer (RR) and Jamie Overton (CSK) have both been included in the ODI squad. It seems unlikely that Overton will go back to India when the league resumes.
Although RCB is hurt by Bethell's absence, its two other English players, Phil Salt and Liam Livingstone, were left out of England's ODI team and will be available for the remainder of the IPL. Only the English T20I team has named Salt.
