Last Friday, February 28, Jos Buttler resigned as England's white-ball skipper following the team's humiliating 2025 Champions Trophy group-stage loss. In the group encounter against South Africa in Karachi on Saturday, he played his last game as captain. England lost by seven wickets to finish the season without a victory.

Buttler issued a long social media statement on Monday, acknowledging that he was left feeling "great sadness" over his resignation and the outcome.

England had a terrible Champions Trophy experience in Pakistan. The 2019 world champions lost three straight games, making them the only team in history to lose every group match in a Champions Trophy competition.

Additionally, the loss extended their disgraceful run to seven consecutive format defeats, including India's 0–3 thumping of them last month.

“It is with great sadness”- Jos Buttler announces his resignation as England captain

Taking to Instagram on Monday, Buttler first shared a cryptic post on Rudyard Kipling's poem 'If,' before posting a lengthy caption with pictures from his T20 World Cup win three years back.

“It’s with great sadness that I have decided to step down as England white-ball captain. Leading your country is an immense honor and something I have and always will be very proud to have done. The results are clear and it is the right time for me and the team to make this decision.

I would just like to take this opportunity to thank all the players, staff, and England fans who have supported me throughout my time as captain but most importantly I would like to thank my wife Louise, and my family. You have been unwavering pillars of support throughout the highs and lows of the job and I cannot thank you enough for the next chapter,” Jos Buttler posted on Instagram.

Jos Buttler’s record as England ODI captain

Buttler won the T20 World Cup in Australia later that year after being named Eoin Morgan's replacement in June 2022.

However, England's performance has drastically deteriorated since, and Buttler has chosen to step aside following three consecutive failed ICC tournaments: the 2023 Champions Trophy, the 2024 T20 World Cup, and the 2023 50-over World Cup.

In 2025, the side that won the 2022 T20 World Cup under Buttler also lost four of five T20Is and six ODIs, marking their tenth loss in 11 international games.

Buttler's record as England's ODI skipper was severely impacted by the losses; in 45 games, the 34-year-old finished with 18 victories and 26 losses. He has the second-lowest win-loss ratio among the 14 captains who have captained England in at least 15 ODIs.
