KL Rahul was an unsung hero in the Champions Trophy 2025 for the Indian side in many ways. Apart from his contribution with the bat at number six in the batting department, he also kept the wickets brilliantly against the five quality spinners under heat.
Rahul made invaluable contributions with the bat in pressure situations, besides one of the biggest contributions for the lower-order batter came in the two knockout clashes of the tournament, when he played two crucial knocks under pressure.

Among all the eight participating nations in the tournament, India was the only side that went with five genuine spinners into the squad. That made the wicket-keeper’s role incredibly tough, especially against the three quality spinners, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, and Kuldeep Yadav.

When Varun Chakravarthy came into the side during their group-stage fixture against New Zealand, it became an even tougher challenge for KL Rahul. It became incredibly important for the keeper to read the ball from the hand as he played a key role in India’s unbeaten run at the tournament.
Chakravarthy finished as the second leading wicket-taker of the Champions Trophy 2025 with nine scalps in three innings, an average of 15.11, and a strike rate of 20, while Kuldeep collected seven wickets in five innings at an average of 21.71.
Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel also managed five wickets each in five innings at an average of over 35. KL Rahul witnessed the skills of the spinners from behind the stumps, and his reply to Sanjana Ganesan, the ICC media representative and the wife of Jasprit Bumrah, was a clear example of it.
“Not fun, Sanjana! I have had to squat 200-250 times when these spinners are bowling.” He replied when asked about the challenge of keeping up against the quality spinners.
“They are high quality. The pitches assisted them a bit, which made them even more dangerous. That makes it even more challenging for me behind the stumps. The way they have bowled, the way they have used those conditions have been phenomenal.” KL Rahul continued.
KL Rahul reflects on maiden ICC title
Rahul was part of the 2019 World Cup when they faced defeat against the Blackcaps in the semifinal. But the veteran reckoned that the ICC victories are not easy to get and he is overjoyed with his first one.
“ICC victories are not so easy to get, and it's my first one, so I'm over the moon. It's been a complete team effort; all 11-12 players have stood up, and their chance and opportunity has come, and it's one of the biggest reasons why we have ended up winning the tournament.” The Bengaluru-born added.
KL Rahul finished the tournament with 140 runs in four innings at an average of 140 and a strike rate of 97.90, shouldering the best score of an unbeaten 42 runs.
He dropped down from number six of late as he edged out Rishabh Pant behind the stumps. The experienced batter reckoned that he was learning from the number five and six batters.

“What I have been taught by my coaches from an early age is that cricket's a team game, and whatever the team requires of you, you need to be able to do that. It requires a lot of preparation, and a lot of work outside the field. I just watch and learn from the batsmen I like at four, five, six.” KL Rahul revealed.
