Australia allrounder Marcus Stoinis shocked the cricketing world as he announced his immediate retirement from ODI cricket just before the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The 35-year-old was included to Australia's provisional Champions Trophy roster, but has opted to retire from one-day internationals and will not play in the competition.
He last represented Australia in an ODI against Pakistan in November 2024. Stoinis was a vital member of Australia's 2023 ODI World Cup-winning team.

Stonis was also a member of Australia's World Cup-winning squad in 2023 and was named the team's ODI cricketer of the year in 2018-19.
Incredible journey: Marcus Stoinis on his Australia ODI career
Following his decision, Marcus Stoinis described his ODI career as an "incredible journey." Stoinis acknowledged his gratitude for representing Australia in the 50-over format. He claimed that retirement was a difficult decision, but it was the appropriate moment to focus on his T20 career.
"Playing ODI cricket for Australia has been an incredible journey, and I'm grateful for every moment I've had in the green and gold. Representing my country at the highest level is something I'll always cherish.
This wasn't an easy decision, but I believe it's the right time for me to step away from ODIs and fully focus on the next chapter of my career. I've got a fantastic relationship with Ron (Andrew McDonald) and I've hugely appreciated his support,” Stoinis was quoted by Cricbuzz.
Stoinis' retirement means he will no longer be part of Australia's Champions Trophy squad, which begins on February 18. The National Selection Panel will finalize the roster following the Sri Lanka Test series.
