Sri Lanka fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana has dealt a huge blow to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL 2025, as a major developing story has stated that he might miss the entire ongoing IPL due to an injury.

At Chennai's MA Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday, March 23, the Super Kings, captained by Ruturaj Gaikwad, defeated the Mumbai Indians by four wickets to get their IPL 2025 campaign off to a strong start. Fans, however, questioned why Matheesha Pathirana was left out of their starting lineup for the first game of the season.

CSK decided to include four foreign players in their lineup: Ellis, Rachin Ravindra, Sam Curran, and Noor Ahmad. Ellis removed Mitchell Santner after giving up 38 runs in his four overs.

Khaleel Ahmed, a left-arm pacer, made an impression with numbers of 3/29, while Noor Ahmad, the team's most costly acquisition (₹10 crore), more than lived up to the hype with a magnificent spell of 4/18.

Matheesha Pathirana retained by CSK ahead of IPL 2025

In recent seasons, Pathirana has been a vital member of the CSK team. In the 2022 Indian Premier League, Pathirana replaced CSK. He has made a name for himself as the franchise's go-to death-over expert.

Before the IPL 2025 mega-auction, the quick bowler was retained for Rs 13 crore. In 20 games, he has claimed 34 wickets at an economy rate of about 7.8.

Pathirana suffered a hamstring injury that ended his IPL 2024 season. He had already taken 19 wickets that season, but he had missed some important matches.

Matheesha Pathirana ruled out of IPL 2025?

In a video posted to the 'Cheeky Cheeka' YouTube channel, the host discussed Matheesha Pathirana's decision to skip CSK's first game. According to him, Pathirana resumed his previous bowling motion. Pathirana might be hurt and might perhaps miss the season, the anchor disclosed.

CSK is yet to release an official statement

"He went back to his old action. Unlike CSK, to retain a player for 13 crores and not back in the first game, we have to wait and see if it is an injury problem or not. One of the news items I am getting is that he is injured and he might be out for the season. I don't know if it is true or not. News like this is around the IPL a lot. We cannot trust any of the news until it is official news," the anchor said.

Pathirana has been a key player for CSK in recent seasons. Pathirana was replaced by Australian pacer Nathan Ellis in the playing XI. CSK has not officially disclosed the reason for his exclusion.
