Matthew Kuhnemann, an Australian left-arm spinner, has been reported for a suspicious bowling action following his outstanding performance in the second and final Test against Sri Lanka in Galle. Matthew Kuhnemann was the principal architect of Australia's 2-0 Test series victory in Sri Lanka.

The 28-year-old was the leading wicket-taker in the Test series, with 16 wickets at an average of 17.18. Kuhnemann became the most successful Australian left-arm spinner in Sri Lanka as a result of his outstanding bowling performance.

Matthew Kuhnemann accomplished this achievement after recovering from a dislocated and fractured thumb suffered while playing for the Brisbane Heat in the BBL 2024-25 just a few weeks prior. However, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has expressed worry over his bowling action.

Matthew Kuhnemann to undergo testing to rectify his action

Matthew Kuhnemann will now have to undergo required testing within three weeks to see whether his actions are legal. Notably, a bowler is only allowed to flex their bowling arm to a maximum of 15 degrees; anything above that is considered prohibited.

The obligatory testing will take place at Brisbane's Centre of Excellence, where a biomechanist will evaluate Kuhnemann's actions and report the findings to the International Cricket Council. Kuhnemann's bowling action is being investigated, and the left-arm spinner is not permitted to bowl in international cricket until the investigation is completed.

Kuhnemann, on the other hand, will be able to play for Tasmania in the Sheffield Shield while his bowling action test findings are pending. Meanwhile, Cricket Australia (CA) authorities were apparently taken aback by the news, as no complaints regarding Kuhnemann's bowling action had been mentioned previously.

According to reports, Queensland and Tasmania never protested about the spinner's behavior, and Australian cricket team management was unaware of the situation while he played four ODIs and five Tests for the national side. However, Kuhnemann has full support from CA.

“The Australian team was notified of the match officials' referral following the second Test against Sri Lanka in Galle and will support Matt through the process of clearing this matter. Matt has played 124 professional matches since his debut in 2017, including five Test matches and four one-day internationals.

He has played 55 Big Bash League games since 2018. This is the first time in those eight years of professional cricket that his action has been questioned. Cricket Australia will liaise closely with the ICC and independent experts in line with ICC regulations. No further comment will be made by Cricket Australia or Matthew until the matter is resolved,” Cricket Australia stated.

Australia and Sri Lanka collide in the ODIs

Australia is currently playing a 2-ODI series in Sri Lanka and will then head to Pakistan for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The first ODI is scheduled for February 12, followed by the final game on February 14 on their Sri Lanka tour.
