England’s former all-rounder, Moeen Ali, has decided to retire from the domestic circuit after the T20 Blast games and will not feature in the Hundred 2025, as ESPNcricinfo has reported. Despite announcing his international retirement, the spinner is an active player in the franchise circuit.

In the final stages of their career, Ali aims to quit English cricket to take up further overseas opportunities, with the ECB’s NOC policy, which limits the player’s movement during the home summer.

Moeen Ali to skip Hundred 2025 for Birmingham Phoenix

In the third and final year of his contract for Warwickshire, Moeen Ali will move into coaching during the blasted game with a player-coach role at Edgbaston and has decided to opt out of the Hundred. It’s not clear if he would be available for the knockouts if the Bears qualify for the round.

He has captained the Birmingham Phoenix across the first four seasons of the league but won’t feature in 2025. The 37-year-old, who has smashed 7135 runs in 334 T20 innings at an average of 24.26 and a strike rate of 138.65, thanks to three centuries and 35 fifties, besides celebrating 243 wickets, has joined Alex Hales in skipping this year’s Hundred.

This follows the ECB’s NOC policy, which prevents players from choosing which leagues they want to play in during the English summer. Hampshire’s captain, James Vince, also discussed the policy after retiring from red-ball cricket ahead of the new season.

Before Moeen Ali, Hales decided the same and informed that he wouldn’t play at Trent Bridge this year. He has since signed for the Knight Riders franchise in the Major League Cricket (MLC) and the Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

Warwickshire confirms Moeen Ali’s decision to retire from England’s domestic cricket

The same can run for Ali, who could return for the Guyana Amazon Warriors in mid-August, having represented the team in the CPL and the first season of the Global Super League last year.

“This is a big decision for me and not one I've taken lightly. But I've decided in the last few days, taking into account what I feel is best for me and my family at this stage in my career.Moeen Ali expressed in a club statement revealed by Warwickshire.

I'm still passionate about the game and want to play as much as I can and still love playing. And I still have a passion for the game, and I love being in a team environment, and also enjoy talking to players about cricket, the tactics, and I think that'll help me move smoothly into coaching after my playing days are over. The Birmingham-born addressed.

Moeen Ali is one of the three players to leave Phoenix, alongside Jamie Smith and Chris Woakes, as London Spirit and Welsh Fire have shown interest in signing these two players.

Birmingham Phoenix to retain strong core players for Hundred 2025

The Phoenix missed out on the last year and has retained a strong core of Jacob Bethell, Liam Livingstone, Ben Duckett, Will Smeed, and Benny Howell. The Dan Vettori’s side will also field a New Zealand pace attack comprising Adam Milne, Tim Southee, and the new signing Trent Boult.

Moeen Ali’s departure will be a huge exclusion for the side in the leadership group. Lewis Gregory, who captained the Rockets in 2022, is going to March’s draft, alongside Dan Lawrance, who will be replaced by Kane Williamson to lead the Spirits.

The Blast starts on May 30, five days after the final of the Indian Premier League (IPL), and Moeen Ali will return for the side after his commitments with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
