England’s former spin all-rounder, Moeen Ali, reckoned that the possibility of Harry Brook penalizing a two-year ban from the Indian Premier League for withdrawing from the tournament at the eleventh hour for a second straight year won’t be harsh.

As the BCCI announced the league's rules, Brook is now eligible to play the 20-over tournament or participate in the auction from 2027. The only exception for players missing the event is when they face an injury or medical issue, only if the player's home board confirms.

Moeen Ali is not surprised at Harry Brook receiving a two-year IPL ban

Brook smashed 190 runs in his maiden season of the league in 11 innings at an average of 21.11 and a strike rate of 123.37 the best score of unbeaten 100 for the Sunrisers Hyderabad.

"It's not [harsh] though, I agree with it. A lot of people do that [withdrawing]. People have done it in the past, and then they come back in and end up getting a better financial package or whatever it is. It kind of messes up a lot of things as well at the same time.” Moeen Ali expressed on the Beard Before Cricket Podcast when asked whether a two-year ban would be harsh.

Delhi Capitals signed Brook for INR 6.25 crore at the mega auction last November, before the middle order batter posted a video on his social media to inform his decision to dodge IPL 2025 due to the requirement of the time to recharge after the busiest period.

“It's messed his team [Delhi Capitals] up, him pulling him out. Any team that loses Harry Brook is messed up a bit, and they've got to now rejig everything and stuff like that. Forget him for a second, if you do pull out, the rule is you get a ban unless it's a family reason or injury. If it's injury, it's different.” Moeen Ali stated.

Moeen Ali opens up on Harry Brook potentially becoming England’s white-ball captain

After Jos Buttler stepped down from his leading role in the white-ball format on the eve of their group-stage clash against South Africa in the Champions Trophy 2025, the news of Brook taking over the rule has been speculated.

Moeen Ali, who will play for the Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2025, felt the possibility of becoming international captain might have pushed Brook to make such a decision with the IPL. The Yorkshire batter will face India in a home five-match Test series before the away Ashes in the winter.

"It's happened a few times before, England players have done it a few times before. With him, he's played a lot of cricket; he's probably just thinking a little bit of a rest, there is a big summer coming up, a big 12 months coming up.” The Birmingham-born addressed.

“England does play a lot. He [Brook] plays all forms, he's probably going to be captain of the white-ball side as well, he's probably just giving himself a bit of a break. It's been a tough winter; he's probably just going to get his game in order a bit more.” Moeen Ali concluded.

Adil Rashid backs BCCI's rule of two-year IPL ban

Moeen Ali’s long-time spin bowling partner in white-ball formats, Adil Rashid, has backed BCCI to impose the two-year IPL ban rule if a player pulls out for personal reasons.

“If they actually put that rule in place before and then this happens, you know going in that this is the rule, where you put your name, and you know if you pull out - this is gonna happen,” Rashid claimed.

“You know the consequences of it. So, I don't think it's harsh. If you pull out through injury or whatever it is, rules may differ or change in that way.” The leg spinner added.
