The absence of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) officials including Chief Mohsin Naqvi during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 presentation ceremony raised quite a few eyebrows everywhere. Despite Pakistan's hosting, no PCB officials were visible at the trophy ceremony in Dubai on Sunday, March 9.
Pakistan was the official host country for the event, but India played all of its matches, including the final, in Dubai. India secured the trophy with a four-wicket victory over New Zealand. Notably, the final was slated to take place in Lahore, but it was moved to Dubai after India advanced to the final.
The Champions Trophy was presented to winning skipper Rohit Sharma by ICC Chairman Jay Shah, and the Indian squad received their white blazers from BCCI President Roger Binny. Other luminaries on stage included former Australia captain Aaron Finch, former New Zealand player Roger Twose, and BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia.
Reality behind Mohsin Naqvi and PCB officials's absence during CT 2025 presentation ceremony
Instead of Sarfaraz Ahmed, the captain of Pakistan who won the Champions Trophy the last time, Aaron Finch carried the trophy onto the stage.
The report further stated that the ICC had complete control over the Champions Trophy final presentation party's makeup. The governing organization hasn't yet made an official remark about the dispute, though.
PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi was supposed to attend but was unable to go to Dubai for health reasons, according to a report from Geo News.
Sumair Ahmed Syed, the Tournament Director and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of PCB, attended the final in Dubai, but the ICC excluded him from the presentation ceremony. Many people believe that this decision was a conscious snub.
“The chairman couldn’t travel, but COO Sumair Ahmed Syed was there and attended the final. He should have been on stage to represent the PCB,” the Geo News report stated.
An ICC spokesperson told India Today that only PCB office bearers could attend the post-match ceremony and no one was present in Dubai.
"Mr Naqvi was unavailable and didn’t travel. As per the understanding, only office bearers can be called for the trophy presentation, so from PCB no office bearer was available for the same. And they (PCB) were the hosts, they should have been there," said the ICC spokesperson.
Pakistan’s disappointing Champions Trophy 2025 outcome
Pakistan's 2025 Champions Trophy campaign was a complete bust. Despite being the host country and the reigning champions, they lost all of their games and were eliminated in the group round.
They lost to New Zealand by 60 runs in Karachi to start their tournament campaign. In Dubai, India defeated the side captained by Muhammad Rizwan by a margin of six wickets. Rain caused their last Group A match against Bangladesh in Rawalpindi to be canceled.
After 29 years, this tournament marked Pakistan's first significant ICC event. Fans were even more disappointed by the team's early exit because they only played one home game.
Mockery doesn't seem to end
Meanwhile, in one of the TV shows in Pakistan, journalist, Shahid Hashmi informed about PCB COO's absence from the Presentation Party in the Champions Trophy final. However, he claimed that despite India's efforts to treat Pakistan as a Nobody, India will always have to wear the Winners Blazer with Pakistan's name on it.
To this, one of the panelists said, "At least, Pakistan will be remembered as a Tailor".
