When former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain MS Dhoni wore a T-shirt with the words "One Last Time" printed in Morse code, it fueled rumors that he was retiring after IPL 2025. Ahead of the highly anticipated match against the Mumbai Indians, the wicketkeeper-batter said he may stay with the team for as long as he likes.
Since 2021, there have been rumors that Dhoni might retire from the IPL. The 43-year-old, however, kept competing in the tournament.
CSK is among the most successful IPL team
With their most recent triumph being in 2023, the wicketkeeper-batter has guided the Chennai Super Kings to five league victories. Dhoni has played in 264 IPL matches, making him the player with the most caps.
During the 2023 IPL season, MS Dhoni had a knee injury while playing and had surgery as a result. After recuperating for the remainder of the year, he returned for the 2024 Indian Premier League, when he batted lower in the order and resigned as captain of CSK. At a strike rate of 220, Dhoni amassed 161 runs off 73 balls.
The 43-year-old cricketer will participate in the IPL for the 18th straight year. Dhoni was kept by CSK as an uncapped player with a wage cap of ₹4 crore after the BCCI reinstated an outdated regulation. As a lower-order batsman and wicketkeeper behind the wickets, the seasoned veteran will be vital to CSK.
I Can Play for as Long as I Want for CSK - MS Dhoni
MS Dhoni finally spoke out about retirement rumors prior to the Chennai Super Kings' matchup with the Mumbai Indians at Chepauk. He said he could play for CSK for as long as he wanted to.
The 43-year-old emphasized the close relationship he has with the team and stated that they are not prepared to part ways. In a hilarious addition, Dhoni said that CSK would persuade him to play another season even if he were disabled or injured.
"I can play for as long as I want for CSK. That's my franchise. Even if I'm in a wheelchair, they'll drag me," he said while speaking to JioHotstar.
MS Dhoni is almost ready to surpass all previous Super Kings run scorers in the IPL. To overtake Suresh Raina, who scored 4687 runs, he needs just 19 more. As for the team's top wicket-taker, Ravindra Jadeja is eight wickets away from surpassing Dwayne Bravo (140 wickets).
