MS Dhoni and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) had a disastrous IPL 2025 as the 5-time champions became the first team to be eliminated from the race for the playoffs.
Legendary player MS Dhoni of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has been the subject of rumors regarding his retirement and whether this will be his final IPL season. Keshav Ranjan Banerjee, Dhoni's boyhood coach, has made hints that the renowned cricketer would play in the IPL again in 2026.
During the upcoming IPL season, Dhoni will be almost 45. The Chennai-based team is currently at the bottom of the ladder and has already eliminated itself from the playoff competition this year. In 11 games, they only managed two victories. How Dhoni fits into the team's overall plan for the upcoming season is still unknown.
“He Will Inform Us”- CSK CEO On MS Dhoni’s Future In IPL
The future of MS Dhoni in the IPL is still up in the air. Regarding retirement, the 43-year-old cricket player has remained silent. Dhoni has batted in the bottom order and stayed sharp behind the stumps.
The Men in Yellow campaign was plagued by injuries and uneven play following a disastrous IPL 2024 season in which they missed the playoffs. Due to Ruturaj Gaikwad's injury, Dhoni had to take over as captain.
The last three-year cycle sparked a renewed interest in Dhoni's future. In advance of the IPL 2025 mega auction, CSK paid ₹4 crore to retain him. The 2019 World Cup was the last time the batsman-wicketkeeper represented India.
CSK chief executive Kasi Viswanathan spoke about the future of MS Dhoni’s playing days and stated that it will be up to the megastar to decide.
“It’s his call, we will never tell him anything. If he makes a decision, he will inform us. He hasn’t told us anything,” CSK chief executive Kasi Viswanathan told RevSportz.
MS Dhoni has captained CSK once more in the IPL, after Ruturaj Gaikwad got injured and was ruled out of the tournament.
Major changes coming in next year in the CSK fold? CSK CEO answers
A key component of the Chennai Super Kings' (CSK) rebuilding strategy is emphasizing the team's youngsters. However, what caused the season to fail? Was the auction strategy the deciding factor? Kasi Viswanathan, CEO of CSK, responds.
“We are not blaming anyone, and we will rebuild. They all are very good players, but it can happen to any team. Also, Ruturaj (Gaikwad) got injured. Not always will you win in cricket. We didn’t play well this time. But we will come back strong,” he said.
Kasi Viswanathan says we don't interfere in team matters
There’s a school of thought that CSK’s brand of T20 cricket has become passé, and they need to embrace a more modern approach.
“It is down to the coaching staff and the cricket management to decide. We don’t interfere in cricketing matters. We have total faith in them,” Kasi stated.
A lot of players in the team have reached the twilight of their respective careers. Will there be a mass clear-out next season?
“Once again, it’s the cricket management’s call. They will decide,” he concluded.
