Mumbai’s selector, Sanjay Patil, didn’t mince his words while highlighting India’s star players’ performance during their Ranji Trophy 2024-25 encounter against Jammu and Kashmir at the BKC Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy. They earned a heavy defeat and found themselves in a tricky position for the quarter-final qualification.
However, the defending champions recovered with a victory by innings and 456 runs against Meghalaya at home. That victory set up their road for the quarter-final encounter against Haryana at the CH Bansi Lal Cricket Stadium in Rohtak.
Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy 2024-25 journey hasn’t been smooth. It started with a huge 84-ru defeat against Baroda before they claimed three victories in the next four games, including a drawn result. Some of the big names of the national side featured in their playing eleven against Jammu and Kashmir.
Mumbai adds Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dube for the Ranji Trophy Quarter-final.
India’s Test captain Rohit Sharma and his opening partner Yashasvi Jaiswal returned to the domestic team after the BCCI released the guidelines. The senior players must now appear in the domestic format for their future national selection.

However, none of Rohit and Jaiswal stood up with golden performances in that fixture. Rohit’s struggle against the right-arm pacers’ incoming deliveries and handling the short balls continued, while Jaiswal couldn’t find the timing in both innings. On both innings, Mumbai’s lower order rescued them, but it was in vain as the Paras Dogra-led side maintained their composure to register a history win.
The MCA selectors announced the squad for the red-ball domestic games as both Suryakumar Yadava and Shivam Dube returned in the 18-member squad after long gaps. Both of these two players were part of the recently concluded five-match T20I series against England at home.
India’s T20i captain Suryakumar, who led the national side to their 4-1 series victory over England, didn’t enjoy a great time with the bat. The pressure of captaincy and his double-minded batting kept him among low scores. His last game was against Maharashtra earlier in the season, one of the two first-class games he has played since the final of the 2023 Duleep Trophy in July 2023.
India’s all-rounder, Dube, has also stayed away from the red-ball domestic format in recent times. His last Ranji Trophy game against Jammu and Kashmir was his only game of the tournament this season. However, the Mumbai-born found a great touch during the fourth T20I against England with a 53-run knock in 34 deliveries in Pune, besides smashing 30 runs in 13 deliveries to go with 2/11 with the ball in the fifth T20I.
MCA selector slams seniors' performance
Sanjay Patil, the MCA selector, warned the senior players following the recent debacle.
“I'm very clear on this. Considering our defeat against J&K, which came despite the presence of six India cricketers in our lineup, which was very disappointing, I want both SKY and Dube not to just participate in this Ranji Trophy knockout match but perform well and contribute to Mumbai's victory.” Patil expressed the Times Of India.

“I'm still upset at the J&K defeat, which I feel was our worst ever. To accommodate the Indian players in that match, we had to deprive a few talented youngsters.” Sanjay Patil added.
