Rishabh Pant set the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on fire for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in IPL 2025. He hammered his second century in the Indian Premier League, this time against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), in the final league match of IPL 2025 in Lucknow.
Jitesh Sharma, the RCB's acting captain, won the toss and decided to bowl first. Before being removed by Thilan Thushara, Matthew Breetzke, the new opener for LSG, scored 14 runs. However, Rishabh Pant and Mitchell Marsh (67) then shared 152 runs for the second wicket. The two helped the RCB bowlers lose the match.
Rishabh Pant slams a majestic 118* for LSG; gets thumped by Jitesh Sharma’s 85* for RCB
Marsh scored 67 runs in 37 balls with four fours and five sixes, but captain Rishabh Pant was the LSG innings' star. Resuming his devastating form, Pant hit a century off 54 balls and amassed 118* off 61 balls with eight sixes and eleven fours. LSG ultimately scored 227/3 in 20 overs.
Virat Kohli (54) and Phil Salt (30) responded by adding 61 runs in 6 overs to give RCB a strong start. RCB fell at 123/4 in 11.2 overs after losing quick wickets to Livingstone, Patidar, and Kohli. However, Captain Jitesh Sharma and Mayank Agarwal began hitting powerful shots from one end.
Jitesh Sharma stole the show with 85* in 33 balls with 8 fours and 6 sixes, while Agarwal was still in the game at 41 with 5 fours. In addition to winning by six wickets, RCB came in second on the IPL 2025 points standings.
Now, on May 29, RCB will play PBKS in Qualifier 1 in Chandigarh, and on May 30, GT will play MI in the Eliminator in Chandigarh.
“I told him to play”- Rishabh Pant’s coach Devender Sharma
With only one half-century under his belt, Rishabh Pant appeared terribly out of touch in the IPL following a slump. Devender Sharma, his longtime Sonnet club coach, had a lot to say but decided to keep it between himself and Pant. But one crucial recommendation—that Pant bat at number three—turned out to be a brilliant one.
Against the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the final IPL league game, the change worked like magic for the flamboyant southpaw, rekindling his signature flair and confidence at the crease.
“I told him to play like Rishabh Pant — and he did exactly that. When there were three matches left in the season, I happened to speak to him and suggested he bat at No. 3. He scored big runs, just like he did during the England series,” Devender Sharma told Cricblogger.
Pant's cricketing journey has been guided by Sharma, who proudly continues the legacy of the late Tarak Sinha.
Pant had a forgetful season
In addition to harming his team, Pant's careless horizontal bat strokes throughout the IPL, including a miscalculated reverse sweep that resulted in his dismissal, also damaged his reputation as one of the game's most aggressive finishers.
However, his brilliant century against Royal Challengers Bangalore altered everything. Pant reminded everyone why he remains one of the most feared batters in international cricket in a masterful effort that erased the resentment of a dismal 2025 IPL season.
