According to reports, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has reduced domestic players' fees even though it has spent an unprecedented sum of money on other administration-related expenses.
The three stadiums where the Champions Trophy was played in Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Karachi were recently renovated by the PCB at a cost of millions of dollars. But their preference is called into doubt by the reduction in domestic players' fees.
Right now, Pakistan cricket is experiencing one of its roughest periods. After losing their opening two games to India and New Zealand, the team was eliminated from the Champions Trophy in just four days.
Pakistan cricket board in turmoil
The nation's previous cricket players and supporters were furious that they were unable to go to the semi-finals despite being the hosts. The players received harsh criticism for their performances, and the board was held accountable for Pakistan cricket's decline.
Another notable incident following the Champions Trophy 2025 final was the absence of a Pakistani delegate from the platform during the award ceremony following India's victory. The PCB was obviously offended by this action and chose to file a complaint about it with the ICC.
PCB cuts down match fees of domestic cricketers
PTI claims that the Pakistan Cricket Board has drastically reduced the match payments for the players competing in Pakistan's domestic 20-over competition, the National T20 Championship. The Pakistan Cricket Board's competition will start in Faisalabad on March 14.
The match fees have been reduced from PKR 100,000 to merely PKR 10,000 and the players will not be happy with their pay being reduced in this manner, and it is unclear if any action will be taken against the board. The reserve players will now receive PKR 5,000 each match.
Same report also claims that over the past few years, Abdullah Khurram Niazi, the head of domestic cricket in Pakistan, has been steadily cutting back on facilities for domestic cricket players.
A source also claimed that the players' staying accommodation has also been changed and they are now living in cheaper hotels as compared to living in five-star hotels before.
"The players who were first being offered accommodation at five-star and four-star hotels are now being offered cheaper accommodation. Air travel has also been reduced for them, besides fees," a source was quoted as saying by PTI.
Champions Cup mentors continue to enjoy huge salaries
Although the pay of the players has been reduced, the PCB still provides significant benefits to the national selectors and the coaches of the five Champions Cup teams. It is estimated that Misbah-ul-Haq, Waqar Younis, Shoaib Malik, Sarfaraz Ahmed, and Saqlain Mushtaq receive PKR 5 million a month in compensation.
The players' and umpires' compensation from the previous season of domestic cricket has not yet been completed. A yearly pension plan for the nation's retired Test cricket players has not yet been established by the Pakistani board.
