Mohammad Hafeez has made a big claim, stating that the Pakistan team was chosen using AI by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). This came after Pakistan lost to India in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 encounter in Dubai on Sunday.
The current ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign for the Pakistan National Cricket Team is degenerating into a nightmare as the hosts are in danger of losing. After suffering consecutive losses to New Zealand and India, Pakistan is in a difficult position and can no longer control its destiny in the famous competition that is currently taking place.
All eyes are now on the outcomes of other teams in Group A to decide the Men in Green's future in the ongoing, highly anticipated event, as their ambitions of qualifying for the ICC Champions Trophy are now in shambles.
Mohammad Hafeez claims AI picked Pakistan’s squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025
Amid this dilemma, Hafeez shocked everyone by making a stunning and incendiary declaration against the team that was chosen for the ICC event.
The Champions Trophy squad was chosen by the national selectors using artificial intelligence, according to former Pakistan National Cricket Team Director Mohammad Hafeez. The former captain of Pakistan also claimed that he couldn't understand the selection procedure and voiced his shock at the team.
“This selection is done with the help of artificial intelligence (AI). They say that they have a statistician; they know how to make teams. We know everything. They pick the players with AI. First, go and search your name on AI,” Hafeez said on a local Pakistan TV show.
The former all-rounder even went so far as to claim that Imam-ul-Haq's opening partner selection was more of a random toss-up than a carefully considered choice.
Mohammad Hafeez calls opener choice a ‘Toss-Up’
The Men in Green called up Imam-ul-Haq after Fakhar Zaman was sidelined for the Champions Trophy because of an injury. Hafeez criticized the decision, claiming that the hosts had not chosen the proper opening partner for Imam-ul-Haq, and Babar Azam was still the first player on the roster.
The former team director stated that Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, and Salman Ali Agha should have batted from 3 to 5 in the batting line-up in the ongoing Champions Trophy 2025.
“It is a toss [Imam's partner]. My mind cannot reach the levels where the team selection is done. I thought about it a lot, but they will have to do a toss for picking the Imam's partner,” Hafeez said.
India end Pakistan's campaign
In a lopsided match on February 23 in Dubai, Team India easily secured a place in the ICC Champions Trophy semifinals by defeating the Men in Green by six wickets.
In the CT 2025 encounter, India bowled out Pakistan for 241, with captain Mohammad Rizwan scoring a tough 46 runs off 77 deliveries and top scorer Saud Shakeel scoring 62 off 76 balls.
Hardik Pandya (2/31) and Kuldeep Yadav (3/40) were the two best players with the ball. Virat Kohli (100* off 111), Shubman Gill (46), and Shreyas Iyer (56) later put up incredible batting displays against the Pakistani team in Dubai on Sunday, helping India finish the target in 42.3 overs.
