Pakistan’s defeat against India in the mouth-watering clash of the Champions Trophy put huge pressure on the side, especially after their opening defeat of the event against New Zealand at the National Stadium in Karachi.

The Blackcaps’ victory over Bangladesh at the Rawalpindi Stadium has knocked Mohammad Rizwan’s army out of the tournament, as they have grabbed just one victory in the last five clashes in 2025. That is a contrasting situation for a side that came victorious in three successive away series in Australia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa.

Pakistan to sack Aaqib Javed and the entire coaching staff

The two consecutive defeats have not gone well for the defending champions, as the consequences could now come on the interim head coach, Aaqib Javed, and the other members of the coaching staff. Several former players have criticized the current squad’s lack of quality.

Shoaib Akhtar, Shoaib Malik, Mohammad Hafeez, Salman Butt, and Waqar Younis have slammed the lack of options and the defensive play in the Champions Trophy. The recent reports in the news agency PTI have reckoned that the PCB will relieve Javed of his duties in the post of the tournament.

“There is backlash over the team’s performance in the CT. The board hasn’t decided as yet on whether the team will have separate head coaches (for red and white ball teams), but one thing is certain: the current support staff will be overhauled now after the poor show in the Champions Trophy.” The source has expressed, as quoted by the Hindustan Times.

“But the way the Board has been changing coaches and selectors since last year, it will be a challenge to find other candidates for these positions.” The reports claimed.

Pakistan looks for former players for head coach job

Pakistan appointed Gary Kirsten as the new head coach of the side just before last year’s T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the United States of America (USA). But he didn’t have much time with the players, coming from the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he coached the Gujarat Titans (GT).

The former South African coach could have spent around two weeks with the Pakistan side before he decided to resign from the position after the board didn’t pick the players for the Australia trip that he identified. Mohsin Naqvi, the PCB chairman, appointed Aaqib as the head coach for the white-ball side in that period.

Javed also replaced Jason Gillespie as the red-ball coach in the Test side after Jason Gillespie resigned from the position.

“The PCB, after the way Kirsten and Gillispie resigned, is not going to get a choice of field when it comes to foreign coaches, so most probably the PCB will look at former players for the job.” The reports have been addressed.

Pakistan’s senior players under pressure

The senior players of the side have found themselves under pressure. Babar Azam received so much criticism after his 64 runs in 90 balls, thanks to a strike rate of 70, during the 321-run chase, while the bowlers, including Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah, and Haris Rauf, flew around the park.

Issues continued in the second fixture against India at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on February 23. Pakistan’s middle order failed to get going against the spinners, as they could manage only 241 runs in the first innings, while the pacers couldn’t collect rewards with the new ball in the first 10 overs.
