Australian Captain Pat Cummins missed the ongoing two-Test match series in Sri Lanka due to paternity leave and an ankle injury. He picked up the issue during the five-match red-ball home series against India during the Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25.

Cummins will also miss the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025 with the same injury, along with their lanky pacer, Josh Hazlewood. It has been a long-term issue for the current ODI champions as they will be without their all-rounder Marcus Stonis, who retired from the 50-over format with immediate effect.

Pat Cummins’ wife posted baby girl’s picture on social media

The Australian captain’s wife, Becky, posted on Instagram with a picture of the newborn being cuddled by her mother.

“She’s here. Our beautiful baby girl, Edi. Words can’t describe how overjoyed & full of love we feel right now.” She wrote on the social media platform.

Cummins has previously mentioned that he wanted to carry a better balance between his life and the work among the professional cricketers.

“I missed a big chunk [of son Albie’s early days] last time, and I want to work out how we can spend a bit more time at home for that initial period this time around.” Pat Cummins expressed in October.

“Within reason, no one is ever going to bat an eyelid if someone needs to put their family first.” He stated.

Besides having a successful career in Australia, Pat Cummins also wants to forget about a few things and be open when it comes to family matters.

“We’re playing cricket, it’s not the end of the world, so we want people to have long, successful careers for Australia, and you can’t just ask them to put their life on hold to go tour the world and forget about everything else. We’re pretty open when it comes to family.” The New South Wales pacer was highlighted.

Pat Cummins joins long list of players to take paternity leave

It’s not the very first time that a player has taken paternity leave. It appears to be the wider trend in the game. Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh decided the same during the recent Test series against Pakistan.

The former Indian captain, Virat Kohli, missed the last three Tests of the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2020-21. He featured in the opening day-night Test at the Adelaide Oval, before flying back home. Rohit Sharma was on paternity leave for the first Test of the BGT 2024-25 when Jasprit Bumrah led the side in Perth.

Cummins’ family announced the news of their pregnancy with son Albie on Instagram in 2021 and Becky posed many pictures on her socials.

Australia sweats over Pat Cummins’ replacement for Champions Trophy 2025

Australia still has nearly four days before finalizing their squad for the eight-team tournament. They will need to make four changes to the 15-member squad. In the absence of Pat Cummins, one of Travis Head or Steve Smith will lead the side. The latter is already captaining them during the Test series.

The left-arm pacers Spencer Johnson, Ben Dwarshuis, and Sean Abbott are going to join the national squad in Sri Lanka for the two ODIs before the ICC tournament. Cooper Connolly, Jake Fraser-McGurk, and Tanveer Sangha will also be part of the squad.

“Unfortunately, Pat, Josh, and Mitch are managing some ongoing injuries and haven’t come up in time for the Champion’s Trophy. While disappointing, it does present a great opportunity for other players to perform for Australia in a world event.” George Bailey, head of their selection committee, addressed.

Australia will do everything possible to make Cummins fit for the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 final against South Africa in June at Lord’s.
