Pat Cummins, Australia's captain in Tests and ODIs, was ruled out of The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 due to an ankle injury. He is supposed to make his return to cricket in the IPL 2025, after being retained by the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) franchise.
In the final Border-Gavaskar Trophy match versus India in Sydney, Pat Cummins persevered despite his pain. He was originally set to miss the Test series in Sri Lanka because of the birth of his second kid, but a persistent left ankle problem kept him out. During the Champions Trophy, Cummins was not available.
According to Pat Cummins, he will captain the Australian Test team in June when they play South Africa in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 final.
Indian Premier League is ideal preparation for the World Test Championship final: Pat Cummins
Pat Cummins, the captain of Australia, stated that he hopes to recover from his ankle injury in time for the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season.
The Indian Premier League, according to Pat Cummins, is the perfect prelude to the June 11 World Test Championship final versus South Africa at Lord's. In order to be fully healthy for the IPL, Cummins stated that he intends to begin bowling in a week.
"That's the aim. It's four overs in T20s. So physically it's quite a nice build-up for the World Test Championship final, and then the Test matches after that. That's the aim at this stage – start bowling over the next week or so, building up, and should be right for IPL.
It's probably just making sure you're still bowling quite a few balls (during the IPL). The good thing about a T20 tournament is the intensity is really high so that obviously helps quite a bit,” Cummins told cricket.com.au.
Cummins enjoying family time
Without the pressures of training or tour obligations, Pat Cummins says it's been a great month to spend with his family. After years of playing on the field, Cummins acknowledged that it felt strange to watch Australia's Test series against Sri Lanka on television.
"It's been an amazing month or so just having full focus on family time and not having to do too much training or have my eye on a tour. Just being totally present has been really special. It was weird watching the Sri Lanka Test series. I haven't seen the boys play on TV really for years. They were fantastic, the boys were basically faultless. I could follow along and just enjoy it really," he added.
Pat Cummins gives an update on his recovery from an ankle injury
According to the 31-year-old's update, his ankle injury is getting better little by little. According to Cummins, it takes time for a fast bowler to go back to full fitness. The skipper of Australia acknowledged that he would not be able to recover in time for the Champions Trophy.
"The ankle is starting to come good. It's a funny one – it's not like a hamstring where you need six weeks (to recover). It's one of those ones where it really just needs a bit (more) rest to settle down. I've been doing loads of rehab in the gym and trying to build back up slowly.
Especially for a fast bowler, you've got to kind of step towards things. Once you have a bit of time off, you’ve got to start running again, and then you got to start bowling and start building up. So we just ran out of time for Pakistan,” Cummins said.
SRH will be happy for Pat Cummins to return with full fitness and expect him to once again lead them to the IPL final and title glory they narrowly missed out on in IPL 2024.
