But things went downhill for the veteran in the longest format. India faced their very first Test series defeat at home in nearly 13 years against New Zealand. The whitewash by a 0-3 margin means they desperately needed to win the five-match red-ball series in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 to qualify for the third successive final of the WTC.
Under Jasprit Bumrah, they won the opening game at the Optus Stadium in Perth but lost the series by a 3-1 margin. That eliminated them from the race for the Test Championship qualification.
India, under Gautam Gambhir, won the three-match ODI series at home against England. They won the Champions Trophy 2025 in February, beating New Zealand in the final at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. They will now turn their focus to the longest format of the game.
