Prithvi Shaw, a Mumbai batter, was close to signing with the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for the 2025 Indian Premier League, but the agreement fell through at the last minute.

A report claimed that LSG head coach Justin Langer changed his mind at the final minute after first agreeing to sign the Mumbai batter.

Shaw went unsold in the mega auction

In the IPL 2025 mega auction, Prithvi Shaw, who had set his base price at ₹75 lakh, failed to sell.

The Delhi Capitals (DC) were the right-handed batter's last IPL team in 2024. In eight games, Shaw amassed 198 runs at a dismal average of 24.75 and a strike rate of 163.63, including a half-century.

Since making his IPL debut in 2018, Shaw has participated in 79 games. With a strike rate of 147.46 and an average of 23.94, he has scored 1,892 runs, including 14 half-centuries. From 2018 to 2024, the opening batsman played for the Delhi Capitals. But before the 2025 season, the Delhi team cut him loose.

Ayush Badoni cost the franchise ₹4 crore, but Prithvi Shaw was available for a steal of ₹30 lakh. Many cricket fans and experts were taken aback by this decision, which sparked discussion in the sport.

CricBlogger claims that Justin Langer terminated the agreement to sign the young Indian opener.

In the 2025 mega auction, Rishabh Pant was purchased by LSG for an unprecedented INR 27 crore. Pant, however, did not live up to expectations in the 2025 season, managing just 269 runs at a strike rate of 133.16 in 13 innings. His play was a major factor in their season-ending exit.

LSG failed to qualify in the following seasons after making the playoffs in their first two IPL seasons (2022 and 2023). Gautam Gambhir, the current Indian head coach, is thought to have recommended Justin Langer. After the disappointing season, Langer and the team are reportedly going to split ways.

Prithvi Shaw's current cricketing status

Prithvi Shaw was last seen representing Mumbai in the 2024–25 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in December, where she played competitive cricket. With his top score of 49, he amassed 197 runs at a strike rate of 156.34 and an average of 21.88.

In international cricket, Shaw has played for India in five Test matches, six ODIs, and one T20I. In nine Test innings, he amassed 339 runs at an average of 42.37, including one hundred and two half-centuries.

In ODIs, the opening batsman has amassed 189 runs at a strike rate of 113.85 and an average of 31.50. With his final Test matches in 2020 and limited-overs formats in 2021, he has been absent from the national squad for a number of years.
