The left-handed opening batter of the Punjab Kings, Priyansh Arya, has made his name in the history book by celebrating his maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) century against the Chennai Super Kings in Chandigarh.

It was the fifth-fastest IPL hundred in history and the second-fastest among the Indians after Yusuf Pathan in 37 balls. Arya got to the milestone in 39 deliveries thanks to his seven boundaries and nine sixes at a strike rate of 245.24.

He started the tournament on a bang with 47 runs in 23 balls on his debut against the Gujarat Titans before unleashing the full potential against the five-time champions.

Priyansh Arya’s coach reveals the story of his Delhi U-19 trial

Priyansh Arya’s journey to the game, from the Under-19 days in Delhi, has been a roller-coaster. It’s not a surprise to anyone to think how hard it is to make it big in the Delhi Cricket. But Arya’s coach, Sanjay Bharadwaj, a renowned figure of the DDCA, put him in the U-19 trials.

It might not have been possible if he hadn’t gone out of his way. The coach paid a huge club tournament entry fee of INR 45000 to make sure that the pupil could come and see the Delhi U19 trial.

“He was not in the U19 selection process. There was a tournament that a former India player was organizing. The U19 selector was Gurusharan Singh.” Bharadwaj expressed this during a recent interaction with Hindustan Times.

“I wanted Priyansh Arya to feature in the tournament as I was confident he would become the Player of the Series. I thought if he ends up performing well, I will request Gurusharan to consider him for a trial.” He added.

Arya started the innings against Chennai with a first-ball six over the point region against Khaleel Ahmed before pulling the pacer the same result over the square leg region.

“By God's grace, everything happened. Priyansh Arya gave the trial match. We won the tournament. He became the Player of the Series. Ajay Jadeja awarded him a bat.” Bharadwaj highlighted.

Priyansh Arya’s successful Delhi Premier League 2024

Arya nailed six sixes in an over in the Delhi Premier League (DPL) 2024. That was the first instance of him coming under the radar of the IPL scouts. He scored 222 runs in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy at a strike rate of 166.91.

Ravichandran Ashwin, the former Indian spinner, noticed his performance in the tournament and asked the franchise to consider him for selection in the auction. Months later, he collected INR 3.80 crore in the mega auction from the base price of INR 30 lakh.

“He is like my own child. I always believed that Priyansh Arya would fetch good money at the auction. Priyansh told me his friends said he wouldn't get more than INR 1 crore. But I told his father that Priyansh would at least get INR 2.70 crore.” Bharadwaj shed light.

“I watch matches on television. In the Delhi Premier League, I told him that until and unless you score 100 runs, I wouldn't come to watch your match. The very same day, he scored a hundred and smashed six 6s in an over. Then I went to meet him.” The famous Delhi coach reveals how he never requests passes even to Gautam Gambhir.

Sanjay Bharadwaj wants Priyansh Arya to work on the struggling zones

On the very first of the game against Rajasthan, Arya had no idea of the fiery ball from Jofra Archer, who knocked off the batter’s stumps to send the 24-year-old back into the pavilion.

“Priyansh Arya needs to keep working on his match. After the IPL, we have chalked out a plan on how to go about training. Priyansh will come to Bhopal to fine-tune his skills. We need to figure out how Priyansh goes about his business in red-ball cricket.” Bharadwaj concluded.

Punjab Kings’ next counter will be against the Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 12 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.
