For two consecutive games, the Rajasthan Royals (RR) failed to chase the target from a comfortable situation in IPL 2025. Their last defeat against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) has put the inaugural champions in a fresh controversy.

The Sanju Samson-led side, under head coach Rahul Dravid, is currently in eighth place in the points table with a net run rate of -0.633, thanks to six defeats in eight group-stage encounters in the competition so far.

Sanju Samson-less RR crumbled in the death overs

Winning the toss, the Lucknow captain, Rishabh Pant, decided to bat first on a surface that he expected to remain the same for the entire 40 overs in the absence of dew in the evening. However, they didn’t make a solid start inside the powerplay, losing three crucial wickets.

But Aiden Markram’s 66-run knock, shouldering on five boundaries and three sixes, at a strike rate of 146.67 in a partnership of 76 runs with Ayush Badoni (50 runs in 34 balls at 147.06) shouldered them to a safe position before Abdul Samad unleased the beast mode to crack 30 unbeaten runs in just 10 balls.

Rajasthan Royals were in the game for a large part, but they lost wickets at the wrong time. Yashasvi Jaiswal celebrated his third successive half-century in the tournament and ended up with 74 runs in 52 deliveries, thanks to five boundaries and four sixes at a strike rate of 142.31.

The stand-in captain for the clash for the Rajasthan Royals, Riyan Parag, made 39 runs in 26 balls, but he failed to carry the side over the winning margin. Young Vaibhav Suryavanshi was a treat to watch for the fans as the southpaw creamed 34 runs in 20 balls at a strike rate of 170 with two fours and three sixes to his name.

But Avesh Khan’s brilliant spell of death bowling took the game away from the Rajasthan Royals' reach as they fell short of the target by two runs in the end.

RCA Committee shots match-fixing allegation at Rajasthan Royals

During a recent interaction with News18 Rajasthan, the convenor of the Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA) and the hoc committee, Jaideep Bihani, fired shots at the Rajasthan Royals regarding the match-fixing controversy.

The convener of the RCA and the HOC committee, constituted by the government, and the Sri Ganganagar MLA, Jaideep Bihani, have raised many questions regarding the Premier League.

He made a sensational question to the Rajasthan Royals' management and the franchise’s players about how they could fail to lose the contest at the home ground when the required run rate was so low in the final over.

“The ad hoc committee has been appointed by the state government in Rajasthan. It has extended for a fifth time. We make sure all competitions take place without any issues. But then, just as IPL came, the Zila Parishad (district council) took control of it.” The BJP MLA accused the RR side of not letting the RCA management get involved in the 2025 season.

“For IPL, the BCCI had first sent a letter to RCA only, not Zila Parishad. The excuse given by them and RR is that we don’t have an MOU from the Sawai Mansingh Stadium. If the MOU is not there, so what? Aren’t you paying Zila Parishad for every match? He informed.

RR finds a do-or-die situation for playoff qualification

The Samson-led side will need to win all six remaining games in the tournament with huge margins and still hope to see a few results go their way among the other sides for the playoff qualification.

The Royals will travel to the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium to meet the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on April 24, 2025.
