Ravichandran Ashwin has revealed how his former India captain MS Dhoni provided him with the best gift ever, despite failing to make it to his 100th test event in India. Ravichandran Ashwin unexpectedly left the international cricket team during the 2024–25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy match against Australia.
During last December's Brisbane Test match against Australia, Ravichandran Ashwin announced the end of his illustrious international career.
With an MS Dhoni bombshell, Ashwin has now disclosed that he had been thinking about leaving the game much earlier. The cricket world was shocked by the great off-spinner's abrupt decision to quit international cricket.

After his 100th Test in Dharamsala, Ashwin disclosed that his initial aim was to retire. To give him a memorable keepsake, he even invited former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and India captain MS Dhoni to attend the event. Dhoni was unable to go to Ashwin's special match, though.
At a book launch event on Sunday (March 16), however, the former Indian off-spinner hailed the five-time IPL champion for his comeback to the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for the forthcoming IPL 2025, which he views as an even better gift from MS Dhoni.
Ashwin make scintillating revelations
“I called MS Dhoni for my 100th Test in Dharamshala to hand over the memento. I wanted to make that my last test. But he couldn’t make it. However, I didn’t think he would give me the gift of getting me back to CSK. It’s a much better one. So, thank you, MS, for doing it. I’m glad to be here,” Ravichandran Ashwin was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.
The off-spinner performed admirably in his special Test, taking nine wickets to help India win by an innings and 64 runs and seal the series 4-1.

At the occasion, the off-spinner also delivered a moving speech. Ashwin, meantime, has maintained that he is returning to CSK as a seasoned player with honors, but also as someone who is ready to get back into the game like he did in the beginning. Notably, the Chennai team paid INR 9.75 crore at the big auction to acquire the seasoned spinner.
“Most importantly, I have come back to CSK not as someone who has achieved so much but as someone who has gone through the full circle and wants to come back here and enjoy it just like before. It is a wonderful place to be,” Ashwin added.
The off-spinner will be seen in action on March 23 when Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will take on the Mumbai Indians (MI) in their IPL 2025 opener at the M Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
