The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) has received a massive boost with the arrival of Virat Kohli ahead of the 2025 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) on March 15. The batter is coming after a very successful time in India’s Champions Trophy triumph against New Zealand at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium last Sunday.
Kohli is one of the Indian players who joined the squad late, as the national players got a few days’ rest after the ICC tournament. RCB kept on dropping many hints on the batters’ arrival on social media platforms.
Virat Kohli’s purple patch in the Champions Trophy 2025
At home against the Kiwis last year, Kohli failed to put a performance as they earned a 0-3 series defeat for the very first time in more than a decade. He got the touch back in Australia during the opening Test at the Optus Stadium in Perth with the century in the second innings, but it didn’t go well as he ended with just 191 runs in nine innings at an average of 23.75.

The selectors were a bit concerned with the RCB batter’s form going into the Champions Trophy. But the right-handed batter celebrated a fine half-century against England at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. He couldn’t do well in the opening Champions Trophy clash against Bangladesh in Dubai.
But he channeled the pressure of the Pakistan clash beautifully to smash a fine century in the second encounter. After a rare failure against the Blackcaps in the event, Kohli drilled a knock of 84 runs against Australia in the semifinal to shoulder the side to the final.
The veteran finished the tournament as the fifth leading run-getter with 218 runs in five innings at an average of 54.50 and a strike rate of 82.88, shouldering one century and one fifty at the best score of unbeaten 100 runs.
Virat Kohli aims for RCB’s maiden IPL title
Virat Kohli is the rarest player in the history of the game to keep playing for the same franchise, RCB, since the start of the tournament. He sits at the top to be the leading run-getter of the event with 8004 runs in 244 innings at an average of 38.66 and a strike rate of 131.97, shouldering 55 fifties and eight centuries at the best score of unbeaten 113 runs.
The 36-year-old finished the previous edition of the tournament as the leading run-getter with 741 runs in 15 innings at an average of 61.75 and a strike rate of 154.64. In 2023, he also managed 639 runs in 14 innings at a strike rate of 139.82.
Kohli will hope to carry the same touch of runs for RCB in the upcoming 2025 edition of the tournament.

MO Bobat keeps the leadership department open for Virat Kohli
Despite a lot of rumors, Kohli didn’t take the captaincy of the RCB side this season as the management shouldered the entire responsibility on Rajat Patidar, whom Kohli can support. The management reckoned that Virat didn’t need to have the captaincy tag on him to be a leader of the side on the field.

“Of course, Virat was an option. That goes without saying, and I know that the fans would have probably lent towards Virat in the first instance, but we have seen a lot of love for Rajat.” MO Bobat expressed this in a recent interaction.
“Virat doesn't need a captaincy title to lead. I think leadership, as we've all seen, is one of his strongest instincts. I think it just comes naturally to him. He leads regardless,” he added.
