Regarding his future in Test cricket, Rohit Sharma, the captain of the India National Cricket Team, has made a daring decision. The opening batsman has chosen to withdraw from the forthcoming five-match Test series against England, according to reports in India Today.

According to the sources Rohit Sharma chose for the team's benefit, particularly in light of his performance during the Test series against Australia. In the final match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024–25, the captain of India did the same by letting Jasprit Bumrah captain and letting Shubman Gill play in his place.

Rohit Sharma’s poor form in Tests in 2024

Between September 2024 and January 2025, the 37-year-old scored just 164 runs in ten Test matches, raising doubts about his future with the Indian team. In three Test matches against New Zealand, he amassed 90 runs, including his highest total of 52.

Among them is his miserable tour of Australia, during which he amassed 31 runs at 6.2, the lowest average ever recorded by a touring skipper in that country.

There was speculation that the seasoned hitter would retire after he pulled out of the Sydney Test. Rohit, though, declared that he has no plans to give up Test cricket.

Thanks to his poor form and insipid captaincy, India lost 6 Tests out of the last 8 they played and failed to qualify for the final of the ICC World Test Championship, for which they looked like favorites after the Bangladesh series.

Rohit Sharma to opt out of England Test tour; Virat Kohli set to retain his spot in India squad

Now, as per the India Today report, India's Test series against England later this year might not include Rohit Sharma. Following his lackluster performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the Indian captain has chosen not to participate in the forthcoming series, according to sources who spoke to India Today.

The same report also stated that Virat Kohli, who also struggled to score runs against New Zealand in Tests, making 96 runs in 3 games, and then scored a ton in the Perth Test, but a total of 190 runs in the Australia series, will retain his spot in the England tour.

India won back-to-back ICC trophies under Rohit

This is mostly because of his return to form in white-ball cricket. After assisting India in winning the Champions Trophy in Dubai, Rohit and Virat shone. While Virat contributed with blows of 100 not out and 84 against Australia and Pakistan, respectively, Rohit delivered the game-winning 76 in the final.

The new Test skipper will also shortly be chosen by the BCCI. On Saturday, March 29, in Guwahati, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia and other interested parties will meet. The call about the captaincy in the longest format will be taken during that time.
