Rohit Sharma’s form in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 is not going in the right direction. It’s hard to believe that he is the batter who dashed a fine knock of 76 runs against New Zealand to shoulder India to the Champions Trophy 2025 a few weeks ago.
In addition to his off-form, the fitness issue has made it tougher for the veteran. The Nagpur-born, as revealed by the Mumbai Indians’ captain Hardik Pandya, was hit on the knee during the practice session on the eve of the game. But he has failed to recover from it and sat out of the game against the Lucknow Super Giants at the Ekana Stadium.
Mahele Jayawardene provides Rohit Sharma’s fitness update
In Rohit Sharma’s absence, Mumbai decided to go with Will Jacks and Ryan Rickelton as the two opening batters. The two foreign players failed to offer the franchise the expected start in the powerplay during a 204-run chase.
After the five-time champions’ defeat by 12 runs in the contest, MI’s head coach, Mahela Jayawardene, gave a fresh update on the fitness status of their former captain.
“Ro got a hit on his knee just in the IT band. He tried to bat yesterday and couldn’t put any weight on it. Again, he came and did a fitness test early today to try, and it was discomfort for him to put weight on that, so he felt it was 100% for him to play this game.” The former Sri Lankan captain expressed this during the post-match press conference.
“That’s why we thought we would give him a few more days to try and get through that. (It was) Unfortunate what happened in the nets.” Jayawardene revealed.
There is no certainty if Rohit Sharma will be back for their next clash of the tournament against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Rohit Sharma’s Struggling IPL 2025
In the three innings of the IPL 2025 so far, the right-handed batter has collected only 21 runs at an average of seven and a strike rate of 105, with the best score of 13. It’s not a good start compared to the previous season when he smashed 417 runs in 14 innings at an average of 32.08 and a strike rate of 150, shoulder-charging three half-centuries.
During the five-time champions’ opening encounter against the Chennai Super Kings, Rohit Sharma struggled in the first three balls against the left-arm pacer, Khaleel Ahmed, before punching the ball straight into the hands of the mid-onfielder.
In the following clash, the 38-year-old got a good start with a couple of successive boundaries before Mohammed Siraj broke the top of the middle stump to send the batter back.
During a small run-chase against the Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens, many expected Rohit Sharma to stay till the end in the successful run chase. But he again fell for just 13 runs in 12 balls.
Mumbai Indians fall short of LSG’s target by 12 runs
Mumbai, opting to bowl first, was not able to pick up early wickets in the powerplay as Mitchell Marsh went hard at the bowlers to celebrate the half-century. In the end, Ayush Badoni and David Miller’s strong partnership shouldered them over the 200-run mark.
Naman Dhir was excellent in the powerplay before Suryakumar Yadav kept them in the hunt for a long time. But Tilak Verma’s struggling knock ruled them out of the game as they fell short by 12 runs.
