The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selection committee, under the head Ajit Agarkar, has reportedly taken a massive decision to remove Rohit Sharma from their Test squad for the five-match series for the England trip.
Rohit’s place in the Test side is under scrutiny after a poor run in the five-match Test series of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25, which they went on to lose by a 3-1 margin.
That defeat, followed by a home series defeat against New Zealand, eliminated the side from getting the third successive qualification to the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 qualification.
BCCI to drop Rohit Sharma from Test squad; Jasprit Bumrah to lead
The renowned sports journalist Vaibhav Bhola, in a social media post, revealed that the BCCI will drop Rohit Sharma from the red-ball squad for the upcoming England trip. He stated that Jasprit Bumrah, the premier pacer of the side, will replace the opener as the new captain.

The pressure has been consistent on the Nagpur-born since losing the home series to the Blackcaps. His captaincy, including the choice of bowlers and the field positions, was not up to the mark.
On the other hand, Bumrah is undoubtedly the most vital member of the current Test side. He led the team in Rohit Sharma’s absence at the Optus Stadium in Perth during the BGT 2024-25 and earned a 295-run victory to go 0-1 up in the series.
The only issue is his injury management. It will be hard for him to play continuous Test matches, as the BCCI is looking to appoint a vice-captain, who can take charge of the team with Bumrah being away from the set-up during the home red-ball fixtures.

Rohit Sharma’s recent poor Test record
During the three-match home red-ball series against the Kiwis, Rohit collected just 91 runs in six innings at an average of nearly 15, shouldering on one half-century. He celebrated the milestone during the second innings of the opening Test at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
After missing the very first Test in Australia, he went through a horrible time down under, with just 31 runs in five innings at an average of 6.20. Whether it’s against the short pitch delivery or the balls outside the off-stump, the veteran hardly had any answer to the balls.
Last year, Rohit Sharma smashed just 619 Test runs in 26 innings at an average of 24.76 and a strike rate of 63.03. He notched up two half-centuries and two half-centuries at a best score of 131.
Rohit Sharma delivered India's T20 World Cup and Champions Trophy 2025
Even though Rohit's Test position is under question, there is no such issue with his white-ball position. In nearly nine months, he has delivered the blue brigade two titles- the T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and the United States of America, and the Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates.

They lost the ODI World Cup at home in the final against Australia at the Narendra Modi Stadium. But since then, India has not lost a single game in the ICC events. They were behind South Africa in the final of the event at the Kensington Oval in Barbados, but ended up making a strong comeback to lift the title.
There was no such issue against New Zealand. Rohit Sharma’s fiery knock of 76 runs in 82 balls helped them chase 252 runs by four wickets.
