Rohit Sharma has enjoyed an excellent nine-month period with two successive ICC events through the T20 World Cup and the Champions Trophy. But since the end of the eight-team tournament, the questions arise on his retirement plans for the future and if he would extend himself to the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.

Rohit Sharma, at the end of the final of the tournament against New Zealand at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, revealed that he would not be retiring from the 50-over format just to make sure that no one spreads any rumor going forward.

Rohit Sharma elaborates on plans for Indian cricket

India’s captain didn’t enjoy a great time across formats in the last three to four months, especially with 31 runs in five innings down under during the Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25. His century during the second encounter at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack gave the selectors some respite before a marquee event.

Rohit Sharma again failed to go beyond the first 10 overs in the Champions Trophy group stage and semifinal contest. But once he crossed the powerplay mark in the final against the Blackcaps in Dubai, he ended up with 76 runs. The Nagpur-born finished the tournament with 180 runs in five innings at 36 and a strike rate of 100.

“Right now, I am taking things as they come. It wouldn't be fair for me to think too far ahead. At this moment, my focus is on playing well and maintaining the right mindset. I don't want to draw any lines and say whether I will or won't play in the 2027 World Cup. There's no point in making such statements right now.He told the official broadcaster after the final.

Rohit Sharma is not looking far ahead in his international career

The Mumbai batter revealed that he never wants to look far ahead in his career and has always aimed to take one step at a time for future events.

“Realistically, I have always taken my career one step at a time. I don't like thinking too far into the future, and I haven't done so in the past either. For now, I am enjoying my cricket and the time I spend with this team. I hope my teammates enjoy my presence as well. That's all that matters at this point.Rohit Sharma added.

The consecutive ICC tournaments have shown the desire of carrying Rohit for the 2027 ODI World Cup, but how long will he last in the format? He will be around 40 by then and Rohit Sharma has devised a plan to remain fit and competitive for the future and will collaborate with the coaches to retain full fitness.

India will play around 27 ODIs before the World Cup, with a few additional games potentially scheduled closer to the tournament.

Rohit Sharma’s Test future remains a mystery

With 31 runs in five innings in the last Test trip, any other batter will be dropped for any side. The five-time IPL-winning captain has expressed his wish to keep on playing the ODI and Test format, but the entire decision seems to depend on his IPL 2025 performances.

Rohit Sharma stood down from the playing eleven after the Sydney Test, but the selectors may take a call just before the England series in June and July. He has currently drilled 4301 runs in 116 red-ball innings at 40.57 and a strike rate of 57, thanks to 12 centuries and 18 fifties.
