After India’s success in the recently concluded Champions Trophy 2025 with the second title, fans and pundits have started to wonder if Rohit Sharma would remain with the ODI side for the 2027 World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.

But there is speculation on his Test future, especially after two successive Test defeats as the leader of the blue brigade at home against New Zealand and down under in the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.

Contrasting performance for Rohit Sharma in Tests and ODIs

Rohit Sharma’s century in the second encounter at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack at home against England gave the selectors hope and belief in their captain for the ICC event.

The Mumbai batter carried the same touch in the Champions Trophy 2025 and clubbed 180 runs in five innings at an average of 36 and a strike rate of 100, shouldering on one half-century at the best score of 76.

But his form in the most extended format has not been significant. At home against the Kiwis, Rohit Sharma aggregated just 31 runs in six innings at an average of 15.17 and a strike rate of 68.42, thanks to one half-century that came in the opening Test at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

After missing the Perth Test due to paternity leave, the veteran led the side in four Tests against Australia in the BGT 2023-24 and faced three defeats in those fixtures. In five innings, the right-handed batter drilled just 31 runs at an average of 6.20 with the best score of 10. Before the next England away Test series, this is a huge concern.

Rohit Sharma vows to keep his cards open for the future

The reports of the Indian Express claimed that Rohit has got the backing of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selection committee to lead the side on another major trip.

“He has shown what he can do. Every stakeholder feels that he is the right candidate to lead the Indian side for the tour of England. Rohit too expressed his eagerness to keep playing red-ball cricket.” A source revealed as quoted by the Indian Express.

Just after the victory against the Blackcaps in the Champions Trophy 2025 final, Rohit Sharma eliminated the rumors of immediate retirement but didn’t spell out his long-term plans. He keeps his cards open for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

“Right now, I’m playing well, and I’m enjoying everything I’m doing with this team and the team is enjoying my company as well, which is nice. I can’t say 2027, because it’s too far, but I’m keeping all my options open.” The Nagpur-born told the International Cricket Council (ICC).

“It’s something that makes me happy. There are a lot of things involved, there’s so much pride, and the way this team is playing, I don’t want to leave this team. The way we are playing at this point, there is so much joy, so much fun to play with all of them.” Rohit Sharma added.

Rohit Sharma’s Test performance in England

Rohit Sharma has smacked 524 runs in 14 Test innings at an average of 40.31 and a strike rate of 44.03, thanks to the best score of 127, shouldering on two fifties and one century.

Against the Ben Stokes-led side, the 38-year-old has drilled 1147 runs in 26 innings at an average of 47.79, thanks to four fifties and as many centuries. This away Test series could be the make or break for the veteran in the longest format.
