Team India captain Rohit Sharma and star batter Virat Kohli's future in international cricket has sparked curiosity. The BCCI has specifically asked Rohit Sharma to clarify his post-Champions Trophy plans.

India is planning a long-term strategy for the 2027 ODI World Cup, as well as a transition to Test cricket following the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025.

Rohit's last international encounter was in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where he struggled with the bat, making only 31 runs in five innings.

India lost the series 3–1. As the focus moves to limited-overs cricket, Rohit will be determined to restore his form and make a meaningful contribution to the squad.

Rohit Sharma Asked by BCCI to Clarify Future Plans After Champions Trophy; Virat Kohli safe

The BCCI and selectors want to make long-term planning for the 2027 ODI World Cup and begin a change in Test cricket. As part of this strategy, the board intends to select captains for both formats. Rohit Sharma was reportedly asked to clarify his plans.

"The selectors and people in the board had this discussion with Rohit around the time of the last selection meeting. He has been told that he needs to decide how he wants to plan his future after the Champions Trophy."

"The team management has certain plans going into the next World Test Championship (WTC) cycle and the ODI World Cup. They want to ensure everyone is on the same page for a smoother transition," a BCCI source told Times of India.

Shubman Gill in selectors' fray

Shubman Gill has been selected as India's ODI vice-captain for the Champions Trophy. However, there have been some concerns about Hardik Pandya being given the duty due to his experience.

Rohit Sharma will return to action in a three-match ODI series against England, which begins on February 6 in Nagpur.

Following the series, India will head to Dubai for the Champions Trophy. India is positioned in Group A, alongside Pakistan, Bangladesh, and New Zealand. They'll launch their campaign against Bangladesh on February 20.

BCCI to explore young options for Test captaincy

Rohit Sharma will be 38 in April and as India travels to England for 5 Tests in June 2025, the BCCI is in no mood to have him captain the side for the next WTC cycle. With Jasprit Bumrah's fitness being questioned, selecting a successor to Rohit will be a difficult decision.

"Bumrah’s chances of a long Test series or completing a full season will always be in doubt. The selectors may want a more stable option. Gill has been seen as a captaincy prospect but his returns in Test cricket have been average. Rishabh Pant could also be a strong candidate and maybe someone like Yashashvi Jaiswal can be groomed for the role," the report stated.

Rohit Sharma was the second-highest run-scorer for India at the 2023 ODI World Cup. The batter scored 597 runs in 11 matches at an average of 54.27 and a strike rate of 125.95, with one century and three fifties, behind only Virat Kohli. However, since the World Cup, Rohit has had limited ODI appearances.
