Rohit Sharma’s future in the Indian team and captaincy will be on the line when Men in Blue face New Zealand in the final of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 on March 9, Sunday in Dubai. Reportedly, the BCCI is waiting for the outcome of the summit clash to decide on Rohit Sharma’s captaincy and new central contracts.
The outcome of the Champions Trophy final will also decide Rohit's future as the Indian team's captain, as the team management is eager to solidify the squad's leadership.
In both ODIs and Test matches, Rohit is currently captaining the Indian squad. After leading the country to its second T20 World Cup championship, he announced his retirement from T20Is last year.
New central contracts to be announced by BCCI; Rohit Sharma’s future to be decided
Reports state that it remains a primary factor in the BCCI's decision to postpone the introduction of the new central contracts. According to the Times of India, the team administration and selectors may decide to remove Rohit Sharma from his position as captain of the Test and ODI teams.
Following the catastrophic tour of Australia earlier this year, the news site reported that head coach Gautam Gambhir and top selector Ajit Agarkar had already discussed this matter with Rohit Sharma and the BCCI.
Rohit's end game near?
Additionally, Rohit Sharma was amenable to the notion of establishing a team plan following the conclusion of the Champions Trophy.
"Rohit still believes there is some cricket left in him. He has been told to communicate his plans going forward. Retiring is his call but there will be another discussion around continuing with captaincy. Rohit himself understands the need to have a stable captain if the team wants to prepare for a World Cup. There have been talks with Kohli too but there doesn't seem to be much anxiety around him," a BCCI source told TOI.
Senior players under BCCI's radar
According to the article, Rohit's and a few other senior players' futures in terms of central contracts will also depend on the result of the Champions Trophy final. Currently, players with A+ contracts are Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, Virat Kohli, and Rohit.
However, with their retirement from Twenty20 Internationals and their disappointing performance in Test matches the previous season, Rohit, Kohli, and Jadeja's status in the top division has come under scrutiny.
