Rohit Sharma, in Tests and ODIs, are two different players. His form in the 50-over format never dropped in the last 24 months. The opening batter was in tremendous touch during the 2023 ODI World Cup and carried the same rhythm during the three 50-over games in Sri Lanka.
Rohit struggled so much during the five-match Test series against Australia down under in the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, where he managed just 31 runs in five innings at an average of 6.20 and a best score of 31.
BCCI takes extra care of Jasprit Bumrah
One of the biggest reasons for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to ignore their premier pacer, Jasprit Bumrah, for the Champions Trophy 2025 was that the pacer is being looked at as the national side’s future captain.

The Gujarat pacer was in incredible touch during the BGT 2024-25, where he picked up 32 wickets in nine innings at an average of around 13, thanks to three five-wicket hauls and a couple of four-wicket hauls. But, he picked up the injury during the fifth and final Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) and didn’t bowl from the first session of the contest.
Bumrah has headed to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. Even though there is nothing wrong with the pacers’ bowling fitness, the number one-ranked bowler is yet to start bowling in full swing. The Champions Trophy, which starts a week from now, may break the process of gaining fitness.
But the importance to keep Bumrah in the cotton wool is not only because of the ODI but also because of his Test rest future. The reports have claimed that BCCI has nearly confirmed the Ahmedabad-born as the blue brigade’s new Test captain.
Rohit Sharma is unlikely to play Tests in the future
Even before the Australia trip, Rohit Sharma struggled at home against New Zealand in the three-match series. The opening batter cracked only 91 runs in six innings at an average of 15.15, thanks to just one half-century against the Kiwis.
The PTI news agency has informed, as quoted by the Hindustan Times, that the Mumbai batter may not feature in the red-ball format. Bumrah can replace him as the new Indian Test captain from the five Tests in England in June. That will be the start of the third cycle of the World Test Championship (WTC) for the Indian side.
“It is understood that the main bone of contention was that Bumrah is yet to start bowling full tilt, and those in the know of things said that it is very difficult to get match-fit in such a short time.” The PTI news agency addressed this, as quoted by TOI.

“Rather, he can come back for Mumbai Indians in the IPL and then lead India in England as Rohit Sharma is unlikely to be picked for Tests again.” The report claimed.
Rohit Sharma aims for Champions Trophy
When every single Indian batter struggled in Sri Lanka playing spin, Rohit Sharma stood out for his two half-centuries at the opening position for the blue brigade to collect 157 runs in three innings at an average of 52.33 and a strike rate of 141.44, with the best score of 64.
Even during the recent home series against England, Rohit Sharma drilled 122 runs at an average of 40.67, with a strike rate of 123.23. His century in the second Cuttack ODI gave a lot of confidence to the batter and the team management before the Champions Trophy.
