When the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) celebrated their victory against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the 2024 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, many didn’t find the celebrated beyond the boundary.

That was a vital contest for both sides, as the victory by a specific margin, thanks to the net run rate, could have pushed any one of the two sides over the line. Bengaluru smashed the Super Kings to qualify for the playoffs.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru showed calmness for victory against Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2024

The entire 2024 season for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) was inconsistent. Apart from their victories in the first two back-to-back games, the Yellow Army hardly showed their brilliance in the previous edition. In the last half of the edition, the Ruturaj Gaikwad-led side grabbed only three wins to finish in the fifth position at a net run rate of +0.392.

The Royals Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) franchise had a very tough beginning in the last edition, as they earned just one solitary victory in the first eight encounters. But they turned the clock with six successive victories, including the one against Chennai at home.

In the rain-hit contest, the Faf du Plessis-led side finished with 218/5 in their allotted 20 overs, thanks to a fine 78-run opening stand. Cameron Green collected an unbeaten 38 runs in just 17 deliveries before Glenn Maxwell and Rajat Patidar showed their muscle.

Rachi Ravindra’s 61-run knock kept them in the chase before Ajinkya Rahane drilled 33 runs in 22 balls. Ravindra Jadeja also remained unbeaten on 42 runs in just 22 deliveries before MS Dhoni nearly took them home with a 25-run knock in 13 deliveries.

Aakash Chopra laughs at Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s wild celebration

Yash Dayal, a year after being smashed for five consecutive sixes against Rinku Singh, got the job of defending 17 runs in six final balls to deny the Super Kings the run-rate boost. But MS Dhoni’s gigantic six over fine leg on the very first deliveries carried Dayal back to the nightmare.

But this time, he held his nerve and outfoxed the former Indian captain with an excellent slower delivery. After sealing the 27-run victory to qualify for the playoffs, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) celebrated wildly and didn’t even shake hands with a few opponent players.

It turned out to be a massive controversy in social media, as both sides took jibes at each other. The rivalry of the Southern Derby got another feather in history. Many felt that the celebration wasn’t like winning a league game.

During the scheduled announcement of the IPL 2025, India’s former opener, Aakash Chopra, roasted the Royal Challengers Bengaluru for the same reason.
