Pakistan’s former all-rounder, Shahid Afridi, opened up on the country’s state in the game, claiming that their board chairman, Mohsin Naqvi, advised him that he did not know the game. This state of affairs within the Pakistan cricket ecosystem is being discussed all around.

The senior men’s side went through one of the poorest performances in the recent Champions Trophy 2025, as they exited from the group-stage of the event. It was a sorry state of the country, despite winning three away ODI series at the end of the previous year in Australia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa.

Shahid Afridi takes a dig at Mohsin Naqvi’s knowledge of the game

Shahid Afridi has exposed the zero knowledge of the game of their PCB chairman, Mohsin Naqvi, who is also the interior minister of the country. The country’s former captain believes that Naqvi should surrender himself to the people who know about the game rather than questioning it.

“I met the chairman Sahab a few days ago in Lahore. The initiative about the grounds and the work done at the Gaddafi stadium is pretty good and beautiful. He has worked, and he wants to work further.” Shahid Afridi expressed this during a recent discussion on Samaa TV.

“But he also says that he doesn’t know anything about cricket. When you don’t know cricket, then you should work with good, technical people who have some connection with the sport.” Shahid Afridi added.

Over the last few years, there is no consistency in the Pakistan’s board with changes in the chairman, selectors, captains, board members and even the players. That has never helped them in understanding their own cricket.

Several coaches have resigned, and the captaincy has passed from one player to another. Shaheen Afridi was the T20I captain after Babar Azam stepped down from the position, only for the latter to replace him in the department during the next T20 World Cup in 2024 in the Caribbean and the USA.

Shahid Afridi reflects PCB’s lack of seasoned professionals

Shahidi Afridi has stated that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has lacked some seasoned professionals, and that is also one of the reasons for the decline in the performance of the senior side. He raised the question of the side’s domestic structure.

“The faces we are seeing in the selection committee and directors, they don’t know cricket, they have all been bureaucrats. What is their relation with cricket? Why are they sitting in the selection committee? Why are they running the domestic cricket system?” The former leg-spinner asked.

“Everyone’s seeing the Pakistan team. You should strengthen the domestic cricket structure. If the guardian is good, the child will automatically be good.” The veteran, Shahid Afridi, explained.

Mohsin Naqvi was the former caretaker chief minister of Punjab and took over as the chairman role last year. Under his tenure, the Green Brigade failed to qualify for the group-stage of the competition.

Pakistan slips in Champions Trophy 2025

After their tri-series defeat, Pakistan lost their opening game of the Champions Trophy 2025 against the Kiwis at the National Stadium in Karachi. Babar Azam’s poor knock of 64 runs in 90 deliveries denied them the chance to chase down 321 runs against the Mitchell Santner-led side in the second innings.

They were in a decent position before posting just 241 runs in the first innings against India. Virat Kohli’s fine unbeaten century shouldered them over the line as Pakistan’s last group game against Bangladesh in Rawalpindi ended in a drawn affair.
