When the Indian selectors picked Shubman Gill among the 15 members for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, many questioned if he deserved a place in the 50-over format for the national side.
The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee went a step ahead to shoulder the responsibility of vice-captaincy on the Punjab-born for the ICC mega event.
Shubman Gill’s performance in Nagpur and Cuttack
Virat Kohli missed the opening game of the three-match series against England at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium due to a knee injury. That pushed Shubman Gill to bat at number three. The home side was under pressure, losing two early wickets in their 249-run chase.

But Gill stabled the ship and carried the side close to the finishing line. He pulled the short ball from Jofra Archer into the square leg region for a boundary before playing the same short at the deep backward square leg. Gill used his feet to shuffle inwards to go for the pull shot against Brydon Carse.
When Jos Buttler introduced the spinners into the attack, the right-handed batter drilled the tossed-up deliveries with full class and smashed 87 runs in 96 deliveries at a strike rate of 90.62, shouldering on 14 boundaries.
Shubman Gill carried the same form into the second ODI at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack. Rohit Sharma started aggressively. Standing at the other end, Gill did the right job to keep the same momentum going. The right-handed batter contributed with 60 runs in just 52 deliveries, shouldering on nine boundaries and one six at a strike rate of 115.38.
Shubman Gill becomes fastest to celebrate 2500 ODI runs
Going into the third game of the series at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, India batted first. After losing captain Rohit early in the innings, the onus was on one of the batters to go big in the first innings. Shubman Gill stepped up again with the blade.
The Gujarat Titans captain leaned forward to cream the drive through the extra cover for a boundary before walking down the track to time the full delivery straight down the ground for four runs. He crunched Gus Atkinson on the front foot for the same result before hammering him over long-on for a six.
The 25-year-old didn’t hold back and went with the same flow to muscle the full ball from Liam Livingstone for a six over the bowler’s head. With a cracking four against Mark Wood, Shubman Gill celebrated his seventh ODI century. He took the helmet off and raised his bat to soak the applause.
Gill also overtakes the former South African opening batter, Hasim Amla, to record the fastest 2500 runs in the ODI history. The Punjab batter got the feat in 50 innings, one less than Amla. It’s Gill’s third ODI fixture at this venue, as he has now scored a century across three formats at this ground.
Shubman Gill cements Champions Trophy spot
Yashasvi Jaiswal could replace Gill in the opening position, but with the latter’s purple patch, that option is eliminated. There must not be any question on Shubman’s ODI record.
