The Indian captain, Rohit Sharma, is yet to win a toss in the 50-over format since finding the right side of the coin during the semifinal of the 2023 ODI World Cup against New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. And Shubman Gill reckoned that they have always found the light side of the struggle.
None of those defeats in the toss impacted the Blue Brigade’s result in the encounter as they qualified for the final of the Champions Trophy 2025 with an unbeaten run, beating Bangladesh, Pakistan, New Zealand in the group-stage and Australia in the semifinal.
Shubman Gill reveals team environment on Rohit Sharma’s poor record in the toss
In all three group-stage clashes of the Indian side, Rohit called heads before the coin fell as the tail. The same continued even in the semifinal against Australia, in the semifinal.
In the pre-match press conference before the final, one of the journalists asked Shubman Gill about his mindset as a batter after Rohit lost the toss and teams kept on putting the batters in the middle.
“Not really, you know. Because as a batsman, you are always prepared to bat first, and if you are batting second, that means you are chasing a total. So it doesn’t matter because if you are a bowler, you are always prepared to bowl first.” Shubman Gill expressed in the pre-match presser.
“If you are a batsman, you are always prepared to bat first. I mean, we do talk about it, but in a very light way, you know that you have lost so many tosses, but that doesn’t matter.” The right-handed batter addressed.
Gill smashed a fine unbeaten century in the opening game of the event against Bangladesh in Dubai before struggling to find the rhythm in the next three encounters against the Green Brigade, the Blackcaps, and the Aussies in the final.
Shubman Gill engaged in special practice with Rohit Sharma before the final vs New Zealand
When the entire team was practicing at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in the UAE, Shubman Gill and Rohit turned up for a special practice session at the ICC academy. The former reckoned that he has mostly looked to bat with freedom, which means of batting with less risks, rather than showing the aggression with the blade.
“Whenever I'm batting in the nets, I feel for me, it's about me trying to play as close to as how I would play in the match. And that is the zone for me. Sometimes, we bat in the nets, and we aren't thinking about the situation. We just want to bat well.” Gill addressed this in the presser.

“I think it's easy to hit boundaries. It's easy to hit sixes. But doing these small things is, I think, more difficult. And that's why it requires a lot of repetition for me. And I think that's what helps me in the match to stay in my zone.” Shubman Gill highlighted.

India seeks victory vs New Zealand in Champions Trophy 2025 final
Including Shubman Gill, none of the batters in India’s top order could spend much time in the middle during the final of the Champions Trophy 2025 against New Zealand before Hardik Pandya’s decent knock pushed them to 249 in their allotted 50 overs.
Later in the evening, Varun Chakravarthy’s five-wicket haul magic kept the Kiwis 44 runs short of their target, as they will also hope to carry the same form going from the group stage to the title clash.
