Sourav Ganguly, ex-India captain, has spoken about the rumors of India captain Rohit Sharma’s retirement. In the Champions Trophy 2025 final against New Zealand, Rohit Sharma may be playing his final One-Day International.

After the last game, Rohit will speak with top selector Ajit Agarkar about his future, according to a PTI report.

Sourav Ganguly, the former captain of India, is not happy with the retirement discussions around Rohit Sharma, though. Reminding everyone that Rohit even won a (T20) World Cup a few months ago, Ganguly believes that he is playing well right now.

In addition to selecting his favorites for the forthcoming final between India and New Zealand, Sourav Ganguly asserted that Indian players are playing well in front of the crucial match. He acknowledged that anyone can win or lose, even though he chose India as the favorite.

Sourav Ganguly breaks silence on Rohit Sharma’s future in Indian team

According to India Today, Sourav Ganguly refuted the reports that Rohit Sharma was retiring and questioned why such matters are even being spoken before a crucial match. He also mentioned how well Rohit has guided India in the previous ICC championships.

"Why is there talk of Rohit Sharma's retirement? Why is this even a question? He won the World Cup just a few months ago. I don't know what the selectors are thinking, but Rohit is playing very well. India is far better than New Zealand. India played in the 2023 World Cup finals, won the 2024 T20 World Cup, and they are still unbeaten in this Champions Trophy. The same team will play," Ganguly told India Today.

Rohit's availability as an international player is questioned because India isn't expected to play many ODIs this year. His entire international career may be nearing the end due to his terrible Test form.

Sourav Ganguly says India is favorite to win the Champions Trophy

As he announced the top players for the Men in Blue, Sourav Ganguly chose India over New Zealand as the final favorite. According to the former captain of India, both sides are formidable and anyone may win.

"India is the favorite. India is in good form. Everyone is in very good form. Virat Kohli is there, Shubman Gill is there, Shreyas Iyer, Rohit Sharma, and KL Rahul - everyone is in good shape. It will be a good match. India's bowling line-up is very good. Anyone can win, anyone can lose," Ganguly mentioned.

Given that all seven of the top batters have reached their maximum scores of 40 or more, Indian players have so far appeared strong in the event. With Virat Kohli leading the way with 217 runs at an average of 72.33 in four games, the batting lineup appears to be solid.

Rohit Sharma became the first captain to captain his team in all four ICC finals—the Champions Trophy, the WTC 2023 final, the ODI World Cup 2023, and the T20 World Cup 2024.
