In ODIs, a batter’s average is the most significant indicator of consistency and high performance over time. The batters with the high average are considered to be better in comparison.

From the Netherlands’ Ryan ten Doeschate to India’s experienced wicket-keeper MS Dhoni, they have proven their worth with the bat in various situations, with proven knocks.

Here are the top 10 batsmen with the best average in ODIs

1. Ryan ten Doeschate (Netherlands)

Netherlands’ all-rounder, Ryan ten Doeschate, has held the highest average of 67 in the 50-over format. The current Indian coach has played for just five years in international cricket, for the record.

Ryan has smashed 1541 runs in 32 innings at a strike rate of 87.70, thanks to five centuries and nine half-centuries at the best score of 119 runs.

2. Shubman Gill (India)

India’s future star, Shubman Gill, is sitting in the second position in the table. The youngster, in his first six years, has the second-best 50-over average of 59.04.

Gill has smashed 2775 runs in 55 innings at a strike rate of 99.56, shouldering eight centuries and 15 half-centuries at the best score of 208 runs against New Zealand in Hyderabad.

3. Virat Kohli (India)

No list of ODI records is complete without Virat Kohli. He is the superstar of the format and is in the third position with an average of 57.88, even after playing 290 innings.

Kohli has smashed 14181 runs at a strike rate of 93.34, thanks to 51 centuries and 74 half-centuries at the best score of 183 runs against Pakistan.

4. Dawid Malan (England)

The England left-handed batter, Dawid Malan, has featured in just 30 ODIs but has held the fourth-best average in the format with 55.76. Debuting in 2019, he has smashed 1450 runs at a strike rate of 97.44, thanks to six centuries and seven half-centuries.

After a tough 2023 ODI World Cup in India, he retired from the format, giving youngsters more chances.

5. Babar Azam (Pakistan)

Pakistan’s former captain, Babar Azam, is in the fifth position in the list. Over the years, he has grown in his batting skills with an average of 55.17.

The right-handed batter has smashed 6235 runs in 128 innings at a strike rate of 87.95, shouldering 19 centuries and 37 half-centuries, at the best score of 158 runs.

6. Michael Bevan (Australia)

Michael Bevan, the Australian lower-order batter, was renowned for his fiery batting, especially in the death overs. He has won many games for the national side.

Bevan has an average of 53.38, which is in the sixth position in the table. The southpaw clubbed 6912 runs in 196 innings at a strike rate of 74.16, thanks to six centuries and 46 fifties at the best score of unbeaten 108 runs.

7. AB de Villiers (South Africa)

The former South African captain and wicket-keeper batter, AB de Villiers, is at seven on the list of ODI averages. In a long career of 13 years, he has notched up so many records.

De Villiers celebrated 9577 runs in 218 innings at a strike rate of 101.09, thanks to 25 centuries and 53 fifties at the best score of 176 runs.

8. Jonathan Trott (England)

England’s top-order batter, Jonathan Trott, has an average of 51.25 in the table, having been part of the format for five years. In 65 innings, the right-handed batter nailed 2819 runs at a strike rate of 77.06.

Trott smacked four centuries and 22 fifties, besides contributing so much to the national side.

9. MS Dhoni (India/Asia)

Just like Bevan, the former World Cup-winning Indian captain, MS Dhoni, also contributed immensely to the national side in winning games from various situations. He has carried the ninth-best ODI average in history.

Dhoni finished his successful 50-over career with 10773 runs in 297 innings at a strike rate of 87.56, thanks to 10 centuries and 73 half-centuries at the best score of unbeaten 183 runs.

10. Ben Duckett (England)

Very late in his career, England’s Ben Duckett got the chance to flourish in the ODIs. He gained attention during the recent Champions Trophy 2025.

The southpaw has delivered with 1058 runs in 22 innings at the tenth-best average of 50.38 and a strike rate of 103.92, shouldering three centuries and six fifties at the best score of 165 runs.
