The shortest format has evolved over the years, with the batters showing freedom to nail the big shots from the beginning of the innings. Most top-order batters have entertained the crowd with huge knocks for various sides in the format.

In the T20Is, the former Australian captain Aaron Finch holds the record for the highest individual score by a batter. The right-handed batter smashed 172 runs against Zimbabwe in 2018.

Here are the top 10 highest scores by a batsman in T20s

1. Chris Gayle (175* vs PWI)

The former West Indies batter holds the record for the highest individual score in T20s. Playing for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, the southpaw clubbed an unbeaten 175 runs in 66 balls, thanks to 13 boundaries and 17 sixes.

He recorded it against the Pune Warriors India at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium during the 2013 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). It’s still the highest knock in the format even after 12 years.

2. Aaron Finch (172 vs Zimbabwe)

Finch, during the T20I tri-series in 2018, including South Africa, smashed 172 runs in 76 balls, scoring on 16 boundaries and 10 sixes at a strike rate of 226.31, opening the batting.

Batting wasn’t easy on the Harare surface, with the next best score being 46 in 42 by Darcy Short. In the modern era, it will be incredibly difficult to break the record.

3. Hamilton Masakadza (162*vs Eagles)

This came from the domestic T20 event of Zimbabwe between the Mountaineers and Mashonaland Eagles. Hamilton Masakadza, opening the batting, drilled an unbeaten 162 runs in 71 balls with the help of 14 boundaries and 11 sixes at a strike rate of 228.16.

It’s the third-highest individual score in the T20s as they posted 242 runs on the board for the loss of three wickets in the allotted 20 overs.

4. Hazratullah Zazai (162* vs Ireland)

This knock came from Afghanistan’s home series against Ireland in Dehradun. Opening the batting, Hazratullah Zazai notched up an unbeaten 162 runs in 62 balls at a strike rate of 261.29, with the help of 11 boundaries and 16 sixes.

The home side posted 278/3 in their 20 overs, as this knock stands as the fourth-highest individual score in T20s.

5. Sahibzada Farhan (162* vs Quetta)

Sahibzada Farhan, Peshawar Region’s opener, celebrated the record in Multan just seven weeks ago against the Quetta side. The right-handed batter smacked 162 runs in 72 balls, thanks to 14 boundaries and 11 sixes at a strike rate of 225.

On a flat surface, they lost just one wicket for 239 runs.

6. Dewald Brevis (162 vs Knights)

South Africa’s middle-order batter, Dewald Brevis, got the chance to open the innings for the Titans in Potchefstroom. The right-handed batter was in a different mood and smashed 162 runs in 57 balls, with 13 boundaries and over boundaries to help them post 271/3 in 20 overs.

In reply, the Titans ended with 230/9, falling short of the target by 41 runs.

7. Adam Lyth (161 vs Northamptonshire)

In 2017, during the T20 Blast event, Yorkshire’s opener, Adam Lyth, nailed 161 runs in 73 balls with the help of 20 boundaries and seven sixes at Leeds in Headingley to post 260 runs in 20 overs for the loss of four wickets.

The opponents were not in the chase and were bundled out for 136 runs, losing the game by 124 runs.

8. Brendon McCullum (158* vs RCB)

It’s the T20 knock from the opening game of the IPL 2008 for the Kolkata Knight Riders against RCB that set the stage for the league. The former New Zealand batter nailed an unbeaten 158 runs in 73 deliveries at a strike rate of 216.43.

He bashed 10 boundaries and 13 sixes, as most realized how the league could change the format in the future.

9. Brendon McCullum (158* vs Derbyshire)

It’s a mirror innings from the Kiwi veteran seven years later, playing for Warwickshire in the T20 Blast against Derbyshire. The right-handed batter drilled 158 runs in 64 balls at Edgbaston in Birmingham as an opener.

He nailed 13 boundaries and 11 sixes at a strike rate of 246.87.

10. Aaron Finch (156 vs England)

At the Rose Bowl ground in Southampton, Australia’s opening batter, Aaron Finch, smashed 156 runs in 63 balls at a strike rate 247.61 against England.

He celebrated 11 boundaries and 14 sixes in the knock and got into the top 10 for the second time.
