Scoring runs in Test cricket is always the hardest job. But to do so for any subcontinent batter in challenging and swinging conditions in England makes it even tougher, with determination, skill, and patience, leaving the new ball, especially as a top-order batter.

Virat Kohli, on his first trip to England in 2014, had a poor outing with just 134 runs in 10 innings without a single fifty to his name. His favorite shot, the cover-drive, was making it hard for him. Kohli was getting forward to most of the balls and getting caught behind the wicket.

Here are the top five Indian batsmen with the most Test runs in England

1. Sachin Tendulkar (1575 runs)

The former Indian captain, Sachin Tendulkar, has used his phenomenal technique and skill to collect runs in most of the challenging conditions in England. Whether it’s to go aggressive against the pacers or hold the crease to get ugly runs of the blade, Tendulkar was a master of doing both.

The right-handed batter is the leading run-getter for the blue brigade in England in the longest format. He smashed 1575 runs in 30 innings at an average of 54.31, scoring four centuries and eight half-centuries with the highest score of 193 runs. Quite remarkably, he didn’t get a single duck in those 30 innings.

2. Rahul Dravid (1376 runs)

Rahul Dravid, the Wall for India, was always the man who would put his body on the line to help them win or save any Test match. He was old school and carried excellent determination and patience in making deliveries if required.

Dravid clubbed 1376 runs in just 23 innings in the red-ball format for the national side in England with a jaw-dropping average of 68.80, thanks to six centuries and four fifties at the best score of 217 runs.

3. Sunil Gavaskar (1152 runs)

The former Indian opening batter, Sunil Gavaskar, is the third-highest run-getter for the national side in England. He smashed 1152 runs in 28 innings at an average of 41.14, thanks to eight half-centuries and two centuries at the best score of 221 runs.

On those uncovered surfaces, run-scoring was not the easiest business, but Gavaskar was a different beast for the blue brigade in those early days. Against some of the incredible pacers in an era when batting was the hardest job, Gavaskar would stand tall to save the side after the top order struggled.

4. Virat Kohli (976 runs)

On his very first England trip, Virat Kohli had a nightmare period for India, and calls started to grow about him getting dropped from the national side. However, on his very next trip to the country, Kohli tweaked his technique and showed fabulous determination to collect the rewards in the 2018 series.

Kohli is the fourth leading run-getter for India in the red-ball fixtures in England. The right-handed batter has collected 976 runs in 29 innings at an average of 33.65 with the help of two centuries and five half-centuries at the best score of 149 runs.

Kohli finishes with the record, having retired from the format before the upcoming 2021 series.

5. Dilip Vengsarkar (960 runs)

The former top-order Indian batter, Dilip Vengsarkar, was an elegant stroke player, but on his day, in any condition of any country, Vengsarkar could play a pivotal role for the side.

He is the fifth run-getter of the national side in England with 960 red-ball runs in 23 innings at an average of 48, celebrating four centuries and four half-centuries at the best score of 157 runs.
