The United States of America (USA) surpassed India's 1985 record for the lowest total successfully defended in a full men's ODI. In a low-scoring but thrilling contest against Oman, the United States cricket team managed to defend a small total in their Cricket World Cup League 2 fixture.

Oman lost by 57 runs in the Cricket World Cup League 2 match at the Al Amerat Cricket Ground on Tuesday, February 18. The United States of America was bowled out for 122 runs, their lowest-ever score in men's international cricket. However, their bowlers turned the game around, dismissing the hosts for 65.

Without reducing the number of overs or changing the target, this is now the lowest total ever defended in a full-length men's ODI. When India defeated Pakistan 125 in the Rothmans Four-Nations Cup in 1985, they owned the previous record. In Sharjah, the Men in Blue prevailed by a margin of 38 runs.

USA dismisses Oman for 63 while defending 122 runs in an ODI

The United States of America and Oman combined for 187 runs in this historic match, which was the second-lowest total in a complete men's ODI in which both sides were bowled out. With a combined total of 163 runs in 41 overs, the 2014 ODI between Bangladesh and India has the lowest score.

On a pitch that was conducive to spin, Oman captain Jatinder Singh chose to field first after winning the toss. He opened the bowling with spinner Shakeel Ahmed to capitalize on the circumstances. Using Jay Odedra, Aamir Kaleem, Samay Shrivastav, and Siddharth Bukkapatnam, Oman proceeded with an all-spin attack.

In 35.3 overs, Oman bowled out the United States of America for a meager 122 runs. With an undefeated 47 from 82 balls, Milind Kumar was the only bright point for the United States of America. The best bowler for Oman was Shakeel Ahmed, who recorded 3/20 in 8.3 overs.

But in 25.3 overs, the USA bowled Oman out for a meager 65 runs. Additionally, the American side just used spin. Nosthush Kenjige, a left-arm bowler, claimed five wickets in 7.3 overs. To get through Oman's batting order, the USA also employed spinners Yasir Mohammad and Harmeet Singh.

Another unique record made by the USA and Oman for the first time in ODIs

Not only was the record for the lowest score defended in ODI broken by the USA but they and Oman also created a unique record in the history of one-day internationals. This match became the first men's ODI cricket match to go 4,671 games without a fast bowler bowling a single ball. In addition, the USA-Oman game's 19 spinner-taken wickets tied the 2011 Bangladesh-Pakistan encounter at Chattogram for the most spin-taken ODI wickets.
