The internet has gone crazy about Vaibhav Suryavanshi, and people from all over the world are praising him. At the age of 14, he batted against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in his first IPL 2025 match.
On Saturday, April 19, Vaibhav Suryavanshi made his IPL debut at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur, becoming the youngest player to do so. Instead of Captain Sanju Samson, he began the innings for the Rajasthan Royals. With bowler Shardul Thakur's first ball, the 14-year-old left-hander hit a six.

At an SR of 170, Vaibhav Suryavanshi amassed 34 runs in 20 balls, including three sixes and two fours. While chasing a goal of 181 runs, he began with Yashasvi Jaiswal, scoring 85 runs in just 52 balls for the first wicket.
When Rishabh Pant stumped him off Aiden Markram's bowling, his innings came to an end. Vaibhav Suryavanshi's brief but exciting performance ended with him walking back to the dugout looking tearful.
By striking a six off the opening ball of his IPL career, Vaibhav Suryavanshi became a member of an exclusive group. This achievement has also been made by Aniket Choudhary (RCB), Rob Quiney (RR), Kevon Cooper (RR), Andre Russell (KKR), Carlos Brathwaite (DD, now Delhi Capitals), Javon Searles (KKR), Siddesh Lad (MI), Mahesh Theekshana (CSK), and Sameer Rizvi (CSK).
Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s coach reveals the youngster has been put on a strict diet
Suryavanshi, who was purchased by the Royals for Rs 1.1 crore, became the youngest player to sign an IPL contract.
At a time when the majority of 14-year-olds enjoy their favorite meals at restaurants, Vaibhav Suryavanshi has already given up his two favorite foods—pizza and mutton—for his cricketing aspirations.
"Mutton nahi khana hai usko, instructions hain. Pizza hata diya hai uske diet chart mein se [Mutton is not allowed for him as per the instructions]. Pizza has been removed from his diet chart. He is just fond of chicken and mutton.
"He is a kid, so he used to love pizza a lot. But he doesn't eat it anymore. When we used to give him mutton, no matter how much we gave, he would finish all of it. That’s why he looks a bit chubby," coach Manish Ojha told the Times of India.
"He will go a long way. We’ve seen the way he started the innings, and I can promise you — he will score big in the coming matches. He’s a fearless batter. He has said time and again that he admires Brian Lara. But he’s a mix of Yuvraj Singh and Brian Lara. His aggression is just like Yuvraj’s," he added.
"He was very happy," Coach reveals
Under the close supervision of the team's High Performance Director Zubin Bharucha, Vaibhav Suryavanshi was working diligently the day before the Rajasthan Royals' matchup with the Lucknow Super Giants at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. The 14-year-old packed his kit bag and left for the team hotel after finishing his training session.
Around eight o'clock that evening, his phone rang; it was the RR management. 'Get ready for your IPL debut' was the brief but profound message.
"He was very happy. He called me after his practice session yesterday and said Rahul Dravid sir and the management called him and told him that he will be playing against Lucknow Super Giants, he was elated."
"But it was tense. I said, Just be calm and play the way you have been. He said, Chakke waala ball ayega to marunga, rukunga nahi [if the ball asks to be hit for a six, I won't hesitate]," the coach said.
Vaibhav went on to play a remarkable knock, scoring 34 off just 20 balls, before being stumped by Rishabh Pant. He cried on his way back to the dugout.
"He’s a kid. He’s emotional. He always talks about Rahul Dravid, sir, and his support. He looks up to him like a god. Dravid Sir is always there to support him. He always says, ‘Jab chakka maarne ka ball aayega, to chakka hi maarunga. Single leke kya karunga?’"
"When there’s a ball to hit for six, I’ll hit a six. What will I do as a single? Let me tell you one incident. During practice sessions, I usually give a batter a hypothetical situation and assign a couple of bowlers to challenge him — for example, you need 40 runs in 4 overs or 60 in 6 overs. This guy often steps in and ends up achieving the target with balls to spare,” the coach shared.
Suryavanshi was born on March 27, 2011. He has already played five first-class matches for Bihar in the 2024-25 domestic season.
