Varun Chakaravarthy Fires Shots At Rohit Sharma Just After 1st Man of the Match Award In ODIs

India’s mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy has given a brutal response to India skipper Rohit Sharma, who had lost faith in him and stated "bowls only one kind of variety” during one of his press conferences.

Varun Chakaravarthy grabbed headlines as he starred in India’s crucial win over New Zealand in their final ICC Champions Trophy 2025 group match in Dubai. Varun picked 5/42, in only his second ODI, as Kiwis failed to chase down India’s 249 and lost the game by 45 runs. His heroics ensured that the Rohit Sharma-led side won all their games in the league stage.

Chakravarthy has been magical with the ball

In their final league match, Varun Chakaravarthy was granted the chance to play for India. The mystery spinner, however, seized the opportunity and gave his greatest performance in the second ODI of his career.

The hitters for the New Zealand National Cricket Team appeared unable to handle Varun Chakaravarthy's brilliant fifer. To return with the numbers of 5/42, the mystery spinner took out Will Young, Glenn Phillips, Michael Bracewell, Mitchell Santner, and Matt Henry. He assisted India in sweeping out the opponents for 205.

Following the game, Varun Chakravarthy was questioned about his relationship with Ravichandran Ashwin. He claimed to have spoken with the senior spinner during the TNPL.

While calling CSK player his well-wisher, he said: "For the first question, yes, I've spoken to him (Ashwin) during our TNPL times. I play for his team and I do have some conversations with him at those times. And yeah, he's been a well-wisher for me."

Inquiries concerning Rohit Sharma's remarks on Chakravarthy were also made. The mystery spinner doesn't display his variations to batsmen in the nets, according to the India captain.

He said: "But in T20, I build my over differently. The way of sequencing different balls is different. And in ODI, it is different. So that's why they don't feel that I don't bowl all the variations, but I do bowl all the variations.”

Varun Chakaravarthy acknowledged that he was first anxious because he was having memories to his last visit to Dubai. The spinner went on to say that he benefited from the veteran players Hardik Pandya, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma's constant talking to him, calmed him down.

"And yeah, of course, the first spell of mine, I was a little nervous because the previous things, the emotions, and all were playing whatever happened in the last three years before in this ground. Where a little bit was playing with me and I was trying to keep it down, control it. But Virat bhai, Rohit, and even Hardik, they were telling calm down, calm down. They were coming and talking to me. That really helped,” Varun signed off.

India will face Australia in the first semi-final of the Champions Trophy 2025 on March 4 in Dubai.
