Virat Kohli, the former Indian captain, has dropped a bombshell on his playing future after a disappointing recent Test trip to Australia during the Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25. He was vulnerable outside the off stump for the entire trip, caught by the wicketkeeper and slip fielders.

Australia tours have always been memorable for the Delhi batter, starting from the time when he toured there in 2011/12 before getting the first taste of captaincy in 2014/15. He continued the same purple patch on the next trip but couldn’t retain the same performance in the recent series, what many predicted would be his last in the red-ball format to Australia.

Virat Kohli’s Test performance in Australia

When it comes to the most extended format, Kohli has enjoyed the lion’s share of his Test career down under with 1542 runs in 34 innings at an average of 46.73 and a strike rate of 52.45, thanks to seven centuries and four half-centuries at the best score of 169 during the 2014/15 series at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

Adelaide Oval remains Virat Kohli’s favorite venue to bat in the five-day format with 527 runs in just 10 innings at an average of 52.70, shouldering on three centuries and one fifty at the best score of 141. Even if he returns to the country for the upcoming white-ball series later this year, he is unlikely to be part of another Test trip in 2027/28.

Kohli always finds his best against the best opponents, and his record of 2232 red-ball runs in 53 innings against the current WTC winners at an average of 43.76 is fantastic. In the recent BGT 2023/24, the right-handed batter clubbed 191 runs in nine innings at an average of 23.75, with the best score of 100* at the Optus Stadium in Perth.

Virat Kohli drops a bombshell on a future Test trip to Australia

Speaking at the RCB Innovation Lab Indian Sports Summit in Bengaluru, Virat Kohli compared the disappointments of the BGT 2023/24 with India’s 2014 trip to England, where he contributed 134 runs at 13.40 with no fifties across ten innings.

“If you ask me the intensity of how disappointed I’ve been, the most recent Australia tour would be the most fresh one. So it might feel the most intense to me. For a long time, the tour of England in 2014 bothered me the most. But I can’t look at it that way.” The veteran expressed in the function.

Virat Kohli also insinuated that the 2024/25 trip down under was perhaps his last in the format.

I might not have an Australia tour again in four years. You have to make peace with whatever’s happened in your life. In 2014, I still had the chance to go in 2018 and do what I did. It might not have been the case. It might have been another blunder. But it didn’t turn out that way.” He reckoned.

Virat Kohli discusses his desperation to contribute

Kohli highlights his desperation to contribute to the national side towards the end of the series, as the blue brigade lost the trophy for the very first time in nearly a decade.

“Because I got a good score on the first Test. I thought, right, ‘Let’s go.’ There’s going to be another big series for me. It doesn’t turn out that way. For me, it’s just about the acceptance of, ‘Okay, fine, this is what happened. I’m going to be honest with myself. Where do I want to go? What are my energy levels like?” Virat Kohli addressed.

Kohli, despite the poor run of form, turned the tables to end as one of the leading run-getters for the side’s recent Champions Trophy 2025 triumph. The attention now shifts towards the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025).
