Mentor and batting coach Dinesh Karthik of Royal Challengers Bengaluru has talked about his experience mentoring legendary batsman Virat Kohli during the current IPL 2025 season. This season, Dinesh Karthik joined the RCB's support staff and stated that he has never had the opportunity to teach a legend like Virat Kohli.
Karthik continued by explaining that mentoring a veteran like Virat Kohli, who has already accomplished everything in the game, is more about providing support than it is about issuing orders. The RCB coach went so far as to say that at times, it feels as though Kohli is tutoring him.
Dinesh Karthik’s thoughts on coaching Virat Kohli in RCB
The former Indian batsman-wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik further stated that elite players simply want someone to support them in difficult situations; they don't require technical guidance. And in his new position with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, he is accomplishing just that.
“Players like that don't need coaching. I think it can be a bit overrated. What they need is support and care. They just want you as a coach to know that in case I have a bad day, you should treat me the same. He is a man who has achieved everything possible in this sport. And we want more out of him, which is fair; he is doing everything possible,” Dinesh Karthik said on the RCB podcast.
Additionally, Karthik stated that Virat Kohli occasionally teaches him things, rather than the other way around. Additionally, the RCB coach said that he hasn't taught the attractive right-hander anything himself, claiming Virat Kohli is an expert in everything.
“So, when I just stand behind the nets, I just observe; I watch. It's only fair to say that it's the other way around. He probably teaches me a little bit more than I teach him. And so far, I haven't taught him anything. He knows it all. Just because I have become a coach over a period of 3 months, it's not like I can teach him how to play the sport,” DK added.
