Despite the long list of disagreements in the past between the two Delhi batters, Gautam Gambir and Virat Kohli, they have started to work their way together for the betterment of Indian cricket. The latter had a very tough time across formats before the Champions Trophy.

That raised questions on whether the veteran would stretch his time in the eight-team tournament for the future till the upcoming 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.

Virat Kohli’s recent poor form across format before Champions Trophy

The former Indian captain had a very tough time since the end of last year’s T20 World Cup when the blue brigade went on to win against South Africa in the final at the Kensington Oval in Barbados.

Against Bangladesh at home during the two-match Test series, the 36-year-old had a horrible time against the spinners. The poor period continued even against the New Zealand side in the three red-ball clashes, as he managed just 93 runs in six innings at an average of 15.50, thanks to one half-century.

With a century coming off his blade during the second innings of the opening Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 at the Optus Stadium in Perth, many anticipated the right-handed batter to be back in his old touch, but he didn’t go in the right manner. Kohli finished with just 193 runs in nine innings at an average of 23.75.

In Australia, his old issue of fishing at the balls outside the off stump brought his decline, as many raised questions about Virat Kohli’s form before a marquee event.

Virat Kohli celebrates unbeaten century vs Pakistan to shut the critics

The Delhi batter missed the opening ODI of the three-match series against England in Nagpur but recorded a half-century in the third game at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

The surface at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in the Champions Trophy against Bangladesh was slow, and Virat Kohli failed to get his rhythm and timing right for the encounter. It took him nearly 33 deliveries to smash his first boundary, but the scenario was different against Pakistan on February 23.

During the chase, India got a decent start, and Kohli was able to master the spin in the middle overs. The best part of the knock was him getting the singles in vitals points, which helped him in ticking the scorecard. After Shubman Gill’s dismissal on 46 runs, Kohli got the support from aggressive Shreyas Iyer.

Later, with the last ball boundary through the covers, the 36-year-old celebrated his 51st ODI hundred and became the fastest to notch up 14000 runs in the 50-over format, going past Sachin Tendulkar in the list by a huge margin.

Report leaks Virat Kohli’s plans

The Cricblogger has revealed that Gambhir and the chief selector Ajit Agarkar wanted to discuss Virat Kohli’s plans before the Champions Trophy after the fourth Boxing Day Test in Melbourne. He was also offered the Test captaincy of the side by Gautam Gambhir, the head coach.

“Hours after Virat Kohli’s superlative performance against arch-rivals Pakistan in the Champions Trophy match in Dubai on Sunday — it has come to light that chief selector Ajit Agarkar and coach Gautam Gambhir had wanted to know the star batter’s “plan” during the fag end of the Australian tour when runs weren’t coming that freely.” Cricblogger’s update addressed, as the Inside Sports quoted.

For now, Kohli will aim to continue the same gold performance against New Zealand and in the semifinal to help the side qualify for the final.
