The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) franchise and the fans were in shock when Virat Kohli was in extreme pain after the finger injury he took while fielding during the side’s third encounter against the Gujarat Titans (GT) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

They suffered their first defeat in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 after two successive victories. Shubman Gill’s army blew them away, chasing 170 runs with eight wickets in hand and nearly three overs to spare.

Andy Flower sheds light on Virat Kohli's fitness status

Virat Kohli had a tough evening at the home ground as he could score only seven runs off six deliveries before getting dismissed by Arshad Khan in the hands of Prasidh Krishna. But the injury happened on the 12th over of the Titans’ run chase when he tried to stop the boundary on the fifth ball against Sai Sudharsan.

Krunal Pandya went short as the Tamil Nadu southpaw pulled it through the square. The ball went through Kohli’s hands at deep mid-wicket and reached the boundary. As soon as the former RCB captain looked uncomfortable, the physio attended to him for some medical treatment.

However, the veteran continued to field after the incident as the Bengaluru head coach, Andy Flower, provided a vital update on Virat Kohli’s fitness and revealed that the star batter is fine.

“Virat looks fine; he’s okay.” The former Zimbabwe batter spoke in the post-match press conference.

“Siraj bowled very well, didn't he? It is great for him to come here and do that. I thought he bowled an outstanding spell with the new ball. His lines were tight, and the lengths were good. He threatened the stumps a lot.” Flower added.

Virat Kohli’s performance in IPL 2025

After a fantastic 2024 edition of the 20-over tournament with 741 runs, the expectations were high on Kohli to repeat the same golden performance in the 2025 season, especially after taking retirement from the shortest format for India.

He started the campaign on a high with a brilliant knock of 59 unbeaten runs in just 36 balls at a strike rate of 163.89, shouldering on four boundaries and three sixes against the Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens. His opening stand with Phil Salt provided Bengaluru with the winning platform.

But he went through a tough time in the second encounter against Chennai Super Kings on a slow Chepauk surface. Virat Kohli wasn’t able to get his timing right against the quality spinners and also got a blow on his head. He ended with 31 runs in 30 deliveries at a strike rate of 103.33, thanks to two fours and one six.

Overall, Virat Kohli has 97 runs in three IPL 2025 innings at a strike rate of 134.72.

RCB faces maiden defeat of IPL 2025

Royal Challengers Bengaluru began the 2025 campaign with a clinical victory against the Knight Riders before repeating the same dominance in the second encounter against the Chennai side. In both games, their bowlers set the platform with early wickets in the powerplay.

On the other hand, Virat Kohli and Salt’s opening stand was so crucial in them getting to a huge score. But against Gujarat, they didn’t get the firepower from the start. Salt managed just 14 runs in 13 balls, while Kohli pulled the short ball into the hands of the square fielder.

With the heavy defeat, Bengaluru has dropped down to third position with a net run rate of +1.149.
