Virat Kohli became the new leader of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in 2011 in the Indian Premier League and stayed in the position for the next 13 editions before he decided to step down from the position to focus entirely on his batting.
In his first year as leader, Bengaluru finished as the runners-up of the tournament before claiming the same success at home against the Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2016.

“I think the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) was wondering by then how to choose the future road. At that time, Virat Kohli had already been established in the international cricket. He was still a young player in terms of age but in terms of experience. And he was coming on the back of successful performances regularly.” Chopra expressed this in a video shared by Star Sports.
The Delhi batter is now the leading run-getter of the league with 8004 runs in 244 innings at an average of 38.66 and a strike rate of 131.97, shouldering on 55 half-centuries and eight centuries at the best score of unbeaten 113 runs.
“If you want to travel a new journey, then you have to find your leader first, on whom you can invest for the next 10 years. So, with that thought process, RCB invested in Virat Kohli. Even though there were seniors, Kohli got the opportunity.” Chopra claimed.
Abhinav Mukund makes controversial comment on Virat Kohli’s leadership
The former Indian opener calls Kohli getting captaincy an accident. He felt that the veteran batter has always used aggression and intensity to do well for the side and make sure that they win in any situation in the game.
“I always felt Virat Kohli was an accidental captain. He was our leader when we won the U-19 World Cup. From there on, it just came very naturally to him. And it was just a progression of who he was as a person.” The southpaw highlighted.
“For him, being aggressive comes naturally and that just went seamlessly to his captaincy. So all of his decisions would be based on aggression and making the team win at that point. That’s exactly, what Virat Kohli the captain, meant to me. He was always very to the point and aggressive.” Abhinav Mukund stated.
Kohli was the leading run-getter of last season’s IPL with 741 runs in 15 innings at an average of 61.75 and a strike rate of 154.69, thanks to five fifties and one century at the best score of unbeaten 113 runs.
Varun Aaron impressed with Virat Kohli’s intensity
The former pacer of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Varun Aaron, was also impressed with the batter’s intensity as he always remains proactive to bring a new change in the game's dynamics.

“He always used to come to the ground with a lot of intensity and energy and always wanted to dominate the opponent side. Virat was very different from the previous captains as he was so proactive, and in the face of the opponent, which brought a new change in the dynamics of the dressing room.” The former Indian pacer concluded.
Kohli will be in action for the RCB side during the IPL 2025 opening game against the Kolkata Knight Riders on March 22 at the Eden Gardens.
